About the Speaker
• Jill Bolte Taylor is an American neuroanatomist, author, and inspirational public speaker
• Her personal experience with a massive stroke, experienced at the age of 37, and her subsequent eight-year recovery, influenced her work as a scientist and speaker
Dedicated her career to research into the severe mental illnesses
"What are the biological differences between the brains of individuals who would be diagnosed as normal control, as compared with the brains of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizoaffective or bipolar disorder?"
• She woke up to discover that she had a brain disorder of her own
• A blood vessel exploded in the left half of her brain
• In the course of four hours, she watched her brain completely deteriorate in its ability to process all information
The Twist
"Oh my gosh! I'm having a stroke!"
• Dr. Jill experienced a rare form of stroke that rendered her so disabled that she could not walk, talk, read, write or recall any of her life. It took eight years for her to completely recover all cognitive and physical function.
The Twist
“Stroke of Insight”
This is so cool! How many brain scientists have the opportunity to study their own brain from the inside out?"
Although the stroke damaged the left side of her brain, her recovery unleashed a torrent of creative energy from her right
“Stroke of Insight”
“How many brain scientists have been able to study the brain from the inside out? I've gotten as much out of this experience of losing my left mind as I have in my entire academic career.” — Jill Bolte Taylor
