Defining…•Right

▫Privilege▫Benefit▫“These are what every human

being deserves, no matter who they are or where they live so that we can live in a world that is fair and just”*

▫Rooted in God’s love when He created us in His own image & likeness (our dignity, cf Gen 1:27)

▫Responsibility▫Obligation▫“Something that is your job to do something about, or to think about which affects your life and other people's lives”*

Right or duty?• “Honor your father and mother.” (Eph 6:2)• “I give you every seed-bearing plant all over the

earth and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit on it to be your food”(Gen 1:29)

• God willed that man should be 'left in the hand of his own counsel,' so that he might of his own accord seek his Creator and freely attain his full and blessed perfection by cleaving to him” (CCC 1730)

As Filipinocitizens,

we have our rights & duties.

▫ Not vested with civil and political privileges

▫ No longer has the duties of a Filipino citizen

• Citizen▫ Member of a state or a

political community▫ Whose father or mother

is a citizen of the Philippines

▫ Who is naturalized (formally adopted into the political community) in accordance with law

My Rights•Freedom of Speech, of the Press & of Assembly▫Pertain to freedom of expression▫Ensure that the voices of people

are heard & their views are considered

My Rights•Right to Form Unions, Associations, or Societies▫Only for purposes not contrary

to the law▫To pursue specific good of a

smaller group

My Rights•Right to Privacy

▫Freedom to make my own decisions

▫Except in those matters that concern the public

▫ Upholding this right would enable us to become truly the masters of our own destiny

My Rights•Right to Information

▫Comes with the right to access to all government documents

My Rights•Freedom of Religion

▫Our right to profess our faith & practice our religion, unlike other countries (e.g. in France, they are not allowed to wear Crucifix; in China & Vietnam, they cannot talk about Christianity in public)

My Rights•Due Process of Law

▫Our life, liberty or property must not be taken away from us, except if needed to promote the common good

My Rights•Equal Protection of the Laws▫The law should not discriminate

any class of Filipino citizens but must be made to apply to all

My Rights•Free Access to the Courts & to Legal Assistance▫Right to acquire services of a

lawyer▫Public Attorneys Office (PAO)

▫To hone or develop our potentials to become fully functional and successful citizens

My Rights•Right of workers to a Living Wage▫Fair and just

compensation for the work they render…

My Rights•Right of workers to Safe & Humane Working Conditions▫Safety & good

health▫People work to

live & not live to work

My duties & obligations as a Filipino

citizen,

My Duties & Obligations•Defend the sate

▫How will I defend if I do not know what to defend?

▫Know & love my culture as a Filipino

My Duties & Obligations•Contribute to the

development & welfare of the state▫Study hard!

For myself, my family, my country & most especially for GOD!

Not just to get a good job but to prepare my life ahead!

My Duties & Obligations•Uphold the Constitution &

obey the laws▫Start from:

Come on time Throw your garbage properly Falling in line

▫Obey traffic rules

My Duties & Obligations•Cooperate with duly

constituted authorities▫Who are the authorities?▫Not just follow but I also

need to understand why I am doing it

▫ASK if there is something not clear or if you think that there is something wrong

My Duties & Obligations•Engage in gainful work

▫Remember #2?▫Work so that your family can

live▫God gave us our minds and

bodies to bear fruit. What happened to the third servant in the Parable of the Talents? (Mt 25:14-30)

My Duties & Obligations•Register & VOTE!

▫We are a republic, the supreme power resides in us!

▫Voting is a concrete way of exercising that power

What happens when I do not fulfill my duties?

•Other people lose their rights•It’s unfair•There are consequences

affects not only me but also others

•My friends, family & God will not be happy

•I will not grow and develop•And when most of us don’t,
