Bodies of Water: waters their impaired movement, contamination and political rights
Join us for a presentation by Teresa Montoya and Guadalupe Martinez who are looking at the ways colonialism and industrialization have impacted waterways. These artists are part of the Spill project at the Belkin Gallery at UBC.
Teresa Montoya (Diné, b. 1984) is a social scientist and media maker trained in socio-cultural anthropology, critical Indigenous studies and filmmaking. Drawing from Diné oral histories as well as ethnographic and archival practice, Montoya’s research and media production focuses on legacies of environmental contamination and settler colonialism in relation to contemporary issues of tribal jurisdiction and regulatory politics in the Indigenous Southwest.
Guadalupe Martinez has curated a performance component titled Spill: Response, bringing together activists, performance artists and educators whose practices deeply consider relationships between the body, the land and forms of pedagogy that engage with healing, love and sustainability as collaborative methodologies.
The Spill project involves an exhibition, a podcast series, and public talks and performances. More info: https://belkin.ubc.ca/exhibitions/spill-exhibition/

update:Multi-FaMily aFFordable rental
Housing developMentOctober 7, 2019
In September, we experienced the loss of a fundamental member of the multi-family housing team. Denis Loeppky, who was our project lead for the multi-family housing development as well as the extended care facility, passed away suddenly. Denis had been working with MIB for several years on various capital projects that have benefited our community.
The multi-family housing team is taking the time necessary to re-group and ensure that we continue to advance this work in a good way. We know this project is important to the community and we will provide an update as soon as we have more information to share.
In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to discuss any aspect of the project.
Sincerely, Multi-family Housing Team

The Musqueam people have lived in our present location for thousands of years. Our traditional territory once occupied much of what is now Vancouver and surrounding areas. The name Musqueam relates back to the flowering plant, məθkʷəy̓, which grows in the Fraser River estuary. There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) – People of the məθkʷəy̓ plant. Although a metropolitan city has developed in the heart of Musqueam territory, our community maintains strong cultural and traditional beliefs. Today our population flourishes and we are a strong community of over 1,300 members. To learn more about Musqueam, please visit www.musqueam.bc.ca.
