Here we are going to make an assembly and apply solidworks motion study on it. It’s a lot of fun.

In order to make our assembly we need some parts so first design these parts. They are easy to compose. Here I

assumed that you know the basic of solidworks 3d design and I just guide you with some pictures to know the

dimensions . ready?!

Crankshaft

Open a new sketch and begin with this circle:

Now extrude it :

Open a sketch at the end of the shaft and draw a circle again:

2

Extrude it:

Create the other end of the shaft like this :

Save your crankshaft:

3

Cylinder: Open a sketch and extrude this circle:

Make a shell:

Save the cylinder:

4

Piston: Extrude this circle:

Open a sketch on right plane and draw the extruded rectangle:

Mirror it about the front plane:

5

finish the piston design . draw a circle and extrude it like below.

Connecting rod: Create this sketch:

6

Then extrude it:

Create the assembly: We want to apply motion study on this assembly so we should make the precisely mated assembly. Do it just like me and

there will be no problem. Open a new assembly design and insert the cylinder part first:

7

Now bring the piston in. now it’s time to make our first mates between piston and cylinder. Mate the right plane of

piston to the right plane of the cylinder:

Now mate the outside surface of the piston to the inside surface of the cylinder:

8

Remember to save your assembly at least every two minutes. Now bring the connector rod to the game and make a

concentric mate between these surfaces:

Now get the connector rod to the middle of the piston shaft by this mate:

9

Only one more part left. Insert the crankshaft into the assembly and apply this mate:

Now specify the distance by this mate:

10

The last mate, from “view” menu activate the temporary axis and apply this mate:

Ok, now we are ready to create our motion study. There is small tab on the lower left corner named “motion study” click

on it then you must see this:

11

Click on the motor icon for defining a motor:

Specify motor characteristics just like below:

Drag the timeline to 8 sec:

12

Now click on the play and enjoy the show. That’s it, you’ve done it.

If you made all the assembly mates exactly as I mentioned then the crankshaft will return making the piston go up and

down inside the cylinder. I hope you like this simple tutorial. You have just designed a very simple combustion engine

drive.
