Cost-effective industrial production of

purifed carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is animportant industrial gas, widely

used in industrial applications. COis part of the global industrial gas

market, with an estimated marketof worth of $23B USD, and 5.7%growth expected through 2009. Thisnew technology oers that growingmarket a new, cost-eective, andscalable method for producing COwithout the use of heat or steam.

Industry already uses severaldierent methods of producing thegas, including heating carbon in theform of coke with a limited supply ofoxygen; or by reacting water in theform of steam with carbon. Another

method involves dehydratingmethanoic (formic) acid withconcentrated sulfuric acid, thoughthis method has been limited to labscale production.

The new technology provides acost-eective method for producingcarbon monoxide by dehydratingformic acid with sulphuric acidon an industrial scale. It results inthe production of food-grade COand is scalable from small client-

 based systems to large industrial

installations.

The method of monitoring theproduction and safety mechanismsresults in a very safe productionprocess. The fact that the productionprocess uses no heat or steam alsomakes this an energy-ecientmethod in comparison with existingtechnologies that are currentlyavailable. Typically, 20% reductionin production costs or 40% reductionin capital outlay is possible. Newdevelopments elsewhere in the world

(where ethanol is now produced by

means of fermentation from CO)give early indicators that more cost-eective CO production methods will

 become increasingly important.

The new process:n Produces CO in an energy-ecient,

cost-eective way

n Oers increased safety during theproduction process

n Produces puried CO as its endproduct

n Is scalable

n Serves a large and increasingindustrial market
