I have had many rewarding experiences studying the JD at
Monash, including undertaking a variety o interesting electives
and participating in extra-curricular activities.
My most rewarding experience was partaking in the Willem
C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition.
There are two dierent competitions as part o the Vis
program, one in Hong Kong and one in Vienna. Our team
rom Monash participated in both. Under the dedication and
expertise o our coach, Pro Waincymer, we were successul
in reaching the grand fnal in Vienna and the quarter fnals inHong Kong.
Due to the intensity o the program, we developed key
advocacy, legal analysis and reasoning skills. These practical
skills are benefcial or developing a frm oundation or a
career in law, and I am grateul to have had these experiences
during my time at university.

Ive had an extraordinary experience with the Monash JD
Program. Theres something very afrming about fnding your
tribe o thinkers and go-getters - people who motivate you and
challenge you. And Ive been very privileged to have met them
here at the Monash Law School.
Its not just going to school with people who are nurses, CEOs,
und managers, architects, and journalists - all eager or the
opportunity to test ideas out together in a seminar-style class;
theres also our lecturers - earnest academics and incisive
barristers. One even wrote the title Maritime Law in HalsburysLaws o Australia. They steward this peer-learning and are
passionate about equipping their uture colleagues. Ive had the
opportunity to represent Monash interstate at the International
Maritime Law Moot and locally at the Michael Kirby Contract
Law Moot. Im on the Monash Law Review Editorial Committee,
and work as a barristers legal assistant next door to the Monash
University Law Chambers.
Monash has trained me well and I have enjoyed clerkships at
top-tier law frms (all in the neighbourhood). And looking at our
juniors in school, Im certain theyre going to bring the Monash JD
Program to even greater heights.
I look orward to a lie-long relationship with the school and itsbrilliant support sta, my lecturers and course mates.

Prior to commencing the Monash JD, I completed a
Bachelor o Arts, majoring in Sociology and minoring
in Australian Studies. I chose Monash Law School as
the school has established itsel as one o Australiasand the worlds leading law schools. The exibility
o the JD program allowed me to balance ull-time
study, work, amily commitments and extra-curricular
activities. I particularly enjoy the smaller-sized
classes. This allows a strong sense o community
amongst the Monash JD students.
The diverse student body allows me to learn
alongside proessionals and individuals rom dierent
acets in lie. Teachers are highly approachable, which
creates an eective learning environment. They are
constantly encouraging and supporting students to
achieve their maximum potential. Course content hasbeen exceptional and thought-provoking.

WCL Dual Degree Program
For Monash students considering whether to participate in the dual-degree program with
Washington College of Law, my recommendation would be an unconditional yes.
You certainly will not be alone in being an international student. WCL, in addition to the
Monash dual-degree program, oers the same opportunity to students rom three other
countries. Furthermore, WCL has a vibrant L.L.M program with a signifcant number o
students coming rom overseas to study. As such, I ound the student body, in general,
to be very approachable and accepting. The openness and ability to establish connections
is certainly on par with students rom Monash.
WCL has an excellent selection o international law courses and its location in D.C. provides
ample opportunity or internship opportunities. For example, there are hundreds o NGOs in
D.C. and sometimes a simple phone call asking whether an institution could use a legal intern
is enough to get one an interview.
This is how I landed an amazing internship with Friends of the Earth, which later turned into a
paid contract position.
As a student, I took numerous courses through the program on International and Comparative
Environmental Law. The program provided great opportunities to visit international governmental
organisations, such as the World Bank and UNEP, to engage with their employees and learn
about international mechanisms or the protection o the environment.
The proessors behind the program, as well as the majority o proessors at WCL, areapproachable and encouraging o students seeking assistance outside o class. In particular,
I remember my torts proessor always willing to stay ater class to assist students who needed
more clarifcation on a topic.

Clinical
EducationThe pioneering Monash Clinical Legal
Education program provides students
with the opportunity to gain hands-on
legal training during their law degree. We believe that this is one o the best
ways to learn the skills required to
practise law. Working on real cases
with real clients, students are under
the expert supervision o our legal
practitioners.
The Monash-Oakleigh Legal Serviceassists local communities by providing
access to ree legal advice. When
undertaking a Clinical Legal Education
elective, students develop skills relating
to the practice o law and then put the
knowledge learned in the classroom
into a practical context with real clients.
The program develops core vocational
skills such as client interviewing andlegal diagnosis, oral and written legal
negotiation, accountability, time-
management, mediation and court

Peer-to-Peer
In January 2013, I transerred to the Monash JD rom another
university. When I heard about the peer-mentoring program I
knew it would be the perect opportunity or me to meet new
people and, more importantly, to have a mentor to whom I
could turn and ask basic questions such as how to borrow a
library book, or where to fnd past exam papers.
Becoming a Mentee was great; there was a welcome unction
where you were able to meet other mentors and mentees
and it was a great way to network and meet new people. My
mentor, Janet, oered me assistance with how to approach
exam/assignment questions.
Even ater our time together as mentor/mentee I saw
Janet at another event and told her that I was having trouble
understanding one o my subjects. A ew days later she
emailed me some revision problems that I could work on
as well as a layout o how I should be approaching exam
questions.
Irene ChenMaster o Laws(Juris Doctor)Current Student
I began mentoring in the LSS Mentoring Program in January
2012. I decided to become a mentor ater my own struggle
with navigating through my frst year o law school. Studying
law as a postgraduate brings with it a whole dierent learning
experience due to many students, like mysel, having to juggle
study, work and having a lie. So oten, I am asked abouthow I manage to keep the right balance. Some o the other
common questions are how do you get good marks? and
how should I study? I use my experience o studying law
as an example o how I increasingly got better marks and
explain my study techniques. In this regard, mentoring has
been a great way or me to pass on what I have learnt to new
students, in the hope that they will learn rom the mistakes I
made earlier on in my JD and achieve the results they want.
I usually meet with my mentees a couple o times during the
trimester to see how they are progressing and to answer any
questions. I have been particularly sought ater close to exam
time and I have always been happy to share my tips and trickson how to deal with exams and demonstrate to mentees how
I prepare my study notes. I am very proud that some o my
mentees have remained in contact or advice ater Ive ceased
to be their ofcial mentor; I think its a testament to how
valuable the program is or students and I recommend that
all students get involved.
As I am at the end o my JD, I will cease to be a part o the
Mentoring Program, but still wish to continue to mentor
students ater the rewarding experience I have had at
Monash. As such, I write or Survive Law, an online blog
or law students to put down in writing how I was able to
successully complete my JD.
Janet TanMaster o Laws(Juris Doctor)Current Student
I would defnitelyrecommend becominga mentee to anyonejoining the Monash JD.
