What fueled the age of exploration and why did China and Japan withdraw into isolation?

• Advances in sailing technology enabled Europeans to explore other parts of the world

• European exploration was an important step in creating the globalized world we now live in

• In 1419, he founds navigation school on coast of Portugal

• By 1460, Portuguese have trading posts along west coast of Africa

• Convinces Spanish to support plan to reach Asia by sailing…West

• Throughout 1600s, Dutch trade grows

• Amsterdam, Dutch capital, becomes a wealthy city

• Dutch also control southern tip of Africa

• England’s East India Company gains strength in India

• France also gains trade foothold in India
