- What does modeling mean? Modeling is when someone demonstrates
or preforms a task or a skill prior to the student s attempt WCDSB,
HDSB & Erinoakkids
- Slide 4
- When do we model? Modeling can be used when we are teaching a
multi step or complex skill such as how to hold a particular
object, how to shoot a basketball in the gym, or how to sit nicely
at circle Modeling Reduces Error Provides Information Builds
Confidence Reduces Anxiety WCDSB, HDSB & Erinoakkids
- Slide 5
- Why do we model? Some of our students do not have the ability
to understand what is required to perform certain skills. The
student may have a few components, but may need to be taught
certain steps for the skill to be complete. Modeling provides the
student with visual information that is required with repetition
and practice of the target skill WCDSB, HDSB & Erinoakkids

- Who Can Model? Teacher to Student Teacher Peer to Peer Peer
Student to Teacher Student WCDSB, HDSB & Erinoakkids

- Modeling Guidelines Modeling should be preformed without the
use of verbal instructions/output Modeling should only be used for
student who have strong imitation skills Modeling should be used to
promote independence with a skill WCDSB, HDSB &
Erinoakkids

- Shaping Behaviour Defined as the process in which a series of
closer approximations of a target skill are reinforced Lets take a
closer look at an example WCDSB, HDSB & Erinoakkids

- Why is Shaping Helpful? Shaping can be used for skills that
cannot be prompted easily Vocal Imitations Fine Motor Skills

- Shaping Difficulties If the student can make a response you are
trying to teach, but does not perform it when asked: Shaping
