ModelLoggerheadSea Turtle

These turtles are the superstars of Bald Head Island!Loggerheads make up the vast majority of the seaturtles that nest on our beaches. This model is aboutaverage size of the nesting mothers that make theirway up Bald Head’s beaches, around 3-4 feet long and weighing in at about 300-350 pounds! They are called Loggerheads because of their largeheads and powerful jaws to crunch on marineinvertebrates or plants. They are known to host anentire ecosystem on their backs made up of barnaclesand bioluminescent plankton.

Loggerheads are currently listed as a threatenedspecies by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and are

protected by law. Our Sea Turtle ProtectionProgram is dedicated to conserving each nest that is

laid on BHI!
