• Certification : is the process by which an agency

grants recognition to an individual who has met its

qualifications.

• Can be given from a government or nongovernment

entity

• A certification examination is used to ensure that all

health care providers have the same basic level of

knowledge and skill.

• Once you pass certification, you are eligible to apply

for state licensure.

Saudi license examination

• Licensure : is the process of occupational regulation.

• Licensure is how states control who is allowed to

practice as a health care provider.

• Granted by government authority

• Allows engagement in profession.

• Practicing without licensure is unlawful.

• Holding a license means that :

1. you have completed initial education.

2. you met the requirements to achieve the license.

• However it Does Not mean you can perform as a

paramedic without the supervision of your service’s

physician medical director.

• Registration : Act of enrolling one’s name in

register, or book of record.

• Registration means that a recognized board of

registration holds your:

1. Education records

2. State or local licensure

3. Recertification

• Credentialing : Local process, allows paramedics to

practice in specific EMS agency

• Guided by local medical director

1. Emergency medical responder (EMR).

2. EMT.

3. Advanced EMT (AEMT).

4. Paramedic.

Four Certification Levels

MMR

An EMR could be any person trained in CPR and/or first aid.

Not all states or countries have this as a certification and/or

licensing level.

That is why there is variation between requirements and

allowed skills.

Emergency Medical Responder

MMR

EMRs should be able to:

1. Recognize the seriousness of a patient’s condition.

2. Administer appropriate basic care.

3. Relay information to the paramedic.

MMR

Formerly called EMT-Basic (EMT-B).

Backbone and primary provider level in many EMS systems.

Must be certified before entering a paramedic education

program.

MMR

EMTs are usually trained in:

1. Advanced airway intervention

2. Limited medication administrations

3. Intravenous (IV) fluid therapy

MMR

Formerly called EMT-Intermediate (EMT-I).

Trained in:

1. More advanced Pathophysiology

2. More advanced procedures, such as:

Establishing IV access and Administering IV fluids.

Performing blood glucose monitoring.

Performing some advanced airway management.

Advanced EMT

MMR

Highest EMS level to be certified or licensed at the national

level.

Trained in more advanced Pathophysiology and procedures.

Paramedic

MMR

• Reciprocity: when certification is granted to a

provider from another state or agency.

• Each state has different licensing or certification

requirements and procedures so additional steps may

be required.

Reciprocity

• For reciprocity, most states require you:

1. Hold a current state certification.

2. Are in good standing

3. Have National Registry certification

• Individual states may require you to:

1. Undergo the state’s written and/or practical evaluations.

2. Provide your education transcript and continuing education

hours.

3. Provide information for a background check.

4. Pay a fee to process your reciprocity application and provide a

license.

• How to be registered paramedic in Saudi

commission of health authorities?

• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent in one of the applied

medical sciences specialties or nursing and one year of

internship.

• MSc degree or an equivalent in one of the applied medical

specialties or nursing before acquiring the required

experiences for classification into senior specialist rank.

Qualification required for the classification

MMR

1. Completing the professional classification and registration

application forms

2. Authenticated copies of the practitioner’s qualifications to be

classified

3. Copy of the internship certificate if applicable, the academic

record, and a Guideline of Professional Classification and

previous practice registration certificate (if any).

Requirements for professional classification and registration

4. Authenticated copy of the last experience certificates (one year

minimum duration if applicable).

5. The original identification letter issued by the employer

showing the starting date of the job, the professional ranking

and the specialty. (Not applicable if the applicant does not

work).

6. A copy of the national ID for Saudi nationals and a copy of the

residence permit and passport for non-Saudis.

7. Two recent photographs.

8. A valid basic life support certificate.

9. A medical report for any applicant who is above 60

years of age from an institution other than his own.

10. Equivalency of academic certificates (Bachelor's, MSc, PhD

degrees) by the Ministry of Higher Education in the kingdom

for Saudis who obtained the certificate from abroad.

11. Payment of the fee.

13. Verification of the certificates to be classified if not done

before.
