Mistakes To Avoid When You Start A New Job

The first days or weeks at a new job can often be a stressful but at the same time an exciting period.

You’ll have to learn the ropes and meet a variety of new people, so it’s bound to be a steep learning curve.

However, there are some important mistakes you should avoid making or you could easily create a wrong impression

with your new colleagues.

Turning Up Late

Failing to arrive on time, especially on your very first day, is definitely something you should avoid.

You need to ensure that you’re fully prepared for your start date, including knowing exactly how long it will

take you to get there.

On the morning you start, leave with time to spare, and you’ll arrive feeling fresh and stress-free.

Dressing Inappropriately

Different companies have their own dress code, so make sure you know what the expected style is

before your first day.

You should have an idea of this from your interview, but it’s always best to check if you’re in any doubt.

Decide what you’re going to wear in advance and ensure it’s clean and ironed.

Forgetting Details

Everything will be new in your first few days and you’ll have plenty of details to digest.

Listen to all the information you’re given, whether this is about the building, office etiquette or the actual work.

Don’t be afraid to write things down or ask questions, as this will give a far better impression than forgetting

something or getting it wrong.

Being Too Personal

It’s important to fit into a new office environment and make a good impression, but you don’t want to

seem like the office gossip.

It’s also not professional to go into too many details about your personal life.

Attending work nights out or office lunches can be an excellent way of making friends and

getting to know colleagues.

Good luck!
