• European expedition: made slaves colonies.

• After the American revolution it became part of the USA

• It was one of the founding members of the Confederate States of America.

• After the Civil war thousands of migrants came there.

Economy

• It was the fifth richest state before the Civil War

• Now it is the poorest state in the USA

ALABAMA• Became part of the USA: December 14 of 1819, and is the 22nd

state

• Area: 52,423 square miles

• Population: about 4,464,356 people

• Capital: Montgomery

Geography and climate

Geography:• Alabama has got 5 different

areas: the Highland Rim, the Cumberland Plateau, the Alabama Valley and Ridge, the Piedmont Upland and the East Gulf Coastal Plain.

Climate:• Alabama has got very hot

summers and mild winters and abundant rainfalls.

History• The first European settlement in

Alabama was founded by the French in 1702.

• The Confederacy was founded at Montgomery in February 1861.

• In the 50s and 60s Alabama fought for the rights of black people.

• In 2005 Alabama was damaged by the hurricane Katrina.

Economy

• Alabama’s most valuable agricultural product is cotton.

• The Marshall Space Flight Center, the Redstone Arsenal, the Maxwell Air Force Base, and the Forts Rucker and McClellan are very good for Alabama’s economy.

NEW YORK

• New York is a state in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the United States and is the nation’s third most populous.

• Its capital is Albany even its largest city is New York City. • Their residents are called Newyorkers.

Geography and climateGeography:• It is the 27th largest state by

size.• The state is bordered by New

Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and Connecticut, Massachussets and Vermont to the east.

Climate:• New York has a humid

continental climate: the winters are long and cold and the summers are warm with some periods of uncomfortable humidity.

History• During the 17th century the

colony of New Netherlands settled in the USA and created New Amsterdam (NYC), Fort Nassau (Albany)…

• NY endorsed the Declaration of Independence (July 9,1776).

• France gave the Statue of Liberty as a gift to mark the Centennial of the American Declaration of Independence.

• On the 11th of 2001 Al-Qaeda crashed two airplanes into the Twin Towers.

Economy• New York's gross state

product in 2007 was $1.1 trillion, ranking third in size behind the larger states of California and Texas.

• New York City is the leading center of banking, finance and communication in the United States and is the location of the New York Stock Exchange.

• New York exports a wide variety of goods such as foodstuffs, commodities, minerals, computers and electronics, cut diamonds, and automobile parts.
