The Mission

The cemetery’s thatch hut is a reminder of the Native Americans who inhabited the land prior to the arrival of the Franciscans. The only other sign of Native American life at the mission, the wooden Nat i ve Amer i can g rave marker, is located across the path (below).

%e Cemetery

The lone Native American g r a v e m a r k e r i n t h e cemetery represents not only just the two individuals beneath it but also the entire Native American community at the mission, who were not allowed to be buried in the mission’s cemetery.

Despite popular belief that the mission was primarily inhabited and run by the Spanish, individuals such a those commemorated by this gravestone originated from other European countries such as Ireland. And the young age at which these individuals d i e d ( 39 y e a r s a n d 21 y e a r s , respectively) reminds us of the difficult living conditions prior to the 20th century, where disease made it difficult for individuals to survive beyond their teenage years.
