HistoryAlpha Phi Alpha: The Legacy, A Brief History
The remarkable leadership in the African American community in the 20th century has, without question, comes from the ranks of members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Since its founding on December 4, 1906, the Fraternity has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African Americans and people of color around the country. Alpha Phi Alpha, the oldest intercollegiate Greek letter Fraternity in the United States established for men of African descent, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven College men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood between African Americans. The visionary Founders, known as the “Jewels” of the Fraternity, are: Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelly, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice – educationally and socially at Cornell. During the beginning days, the Jewel Founders and early leaders of the Fraternity worked to lay a solid foundation for the Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character and the uplifting of humanity. All over the world, Men of Alpha have made significant contributions to Black history and the building of our society at large.
Fraternity Mission Statement
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.
Fraternity Vision Statement
The objectives of this Fraternity shall be: to stimulate the ambition of its members; to prepare them for the greatest usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom, and dignity of the individual; to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood; and to aid down-trodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic and intellectual status.

Miss Black and Gold History
The Miss Black and Gold Pageant, under the sponsorship of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., is an outgrowth of the long tradition of Alpha Chapters designation of outstanding young ladies to serve as “Chapter Sweethearts.” The Fraternity recognizes the valuable support rendered to it by the many friends of Alpha Phi Alpha - and this endeavor serves as one mechanism to applaud such support. For some time, several of the Fraternity’s five geographical regions have sponsored Miss Black and Gold Pageants as a part of their conventions. Since the early 1970’s, there has been increasing support of these pageants on a national scale. The first national Miss Black and Gold Pageant was held during Alpha’s 1976 General Convention in New York City. Miss Denise Smith, representing Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia, was awarded the first crown. The Pageant was defer-red following the first event and reinstated during the Fraternity’s 1982 General Convention in Los Angeles, California.
The Miss Black and Gold Pageant is an event whose primary purpose is to highlight and foster the inextricable connection between success and etiquette amongst young women. This pageant spotlights the young women’s poise, self-confidence, communication skills, intelligence, and beauty. In all, the Miss Black and Gold Pageant encompass true womanhood, success, and confidence. Academic excellence and scholarship are greatly stressed in the competition with the Fraternity providing the contestants with scholarships to assist with the financial obligations associated with post-secondary studies.
