Urban sustainability monitoring: the Espoo-Helsinki-Vantaa challenge
What is unique about the Telos monitor?
Ø- Ecological, social and economic aspects are included;Ø- All indicator values are assessed using a uniform sustainability frameworkexpressing scores as % of sustainability goal achievement (distance to target);Ø- First study based on such a wide variety and large number of indicators (~100);Ø- First study benchmarking so many EU cities (114), with a wide variety of sizes(50.000 till >2 million inhabitants) and typologies, spread all over Europe;Ø- The database allows for studying cross-sectoral relationships.

Conclusions1. Highest sustainability scores in Espoo, Stockholm & Munich2. Sustainability scores of EU cities vary widely (North-South)3. Population size, demographic dynamics, geographical region,
typology (e.g. agricultural, industrial) and competitiveness (e.g. labor productivity) were found to be important determinants of urban sustainability performance.
4. Espoo-Helsinki-Vantaa is a top sustainability region in the world (others are Copenhagen, Stockholm, Munich)
5. Recycle economy, energy transition, air quality and arts&culture
6. It has to pioneer further advancements7. This requires a more detailed analysis of interactions within the
region to detect developmental chances See interactive website www.sustainablecitiesbenchmark.eu
