My favorite book has duct tape holding the spine together. I have watched my favorite movie an embarrassing amount of times, and could sing my favorite song backwards for you. I marvel that each one started with a blank page, a reel of film, a silent room, and bit by bit were pieced together to cre-ate something truly captivating and memorable. Design is no different. We are asked to communicate innovative ideas, intense emotion, and important information by combining elements to create something greater.

I want to remind you that it is important to pay attention to those details. To see those distinct parts that make up the framework of design.

Framework THE ELEMENTS OF A CLASSIC, WITH A MODERN EDGE.

Number

To redesign a magazine publication to better reflect modern day aesthetics. The size, length, and overall style could be adjusted to better express the new concept. Vogue, an international classic deeply rooted in the fashion world, was redesigned to mirror the amazing clothes.

The new typography, color palette, and image style were all updated to cre-ate a more visually exciting publication. The magazine was a special winter edition insert so it was shorter in length and much larger in size. By us-ing large scale type, repetitive imagery, and bold colors the special edition Vogue has a much stronger voice than the original version. Masculinity versus femininity, hot versus cold, and old versus new all played significant roles in the redesign. The finished product was a blend of classic fashion and a modern boldness that helped bring it into a new era.

To design a booklet, pamphlet, and map for the TED 2012 Global Fellows Conference. The challenge was to incorporate the current TED branding, which they are so well known for, with a fun playful and inspirational look and feel that encapsulated the current class global fellows.

TED is an established brand so their look and feel is always something that must be taken into consideration when designing. Since the global fellows are the focus of the conference, the outside of the materials call attention to them by using images of their faces in a playful way. The bright, lightheart-ed colors used throughout don’t detract from the colors and typography already in place. Above all, these materials needed to be functional and convey the necessary information about the conference to the attendees and fellows visiting abroad.

To design a three volume book series highlighting issues of intolerance around the world. Each volume, created by a different designer, gave an in depth look at social issues we face today. They final product was a visually cohesive set of hand bound books.

To begin the project, research was done to pick a topic that was large enough to easily fill three books. Once the concept of intolerance was chosen, the specific areas were chosen. Religion, gender, and sexual were the three areas of focus. As a team, the overall look and feel was developed to ensure that the books felt as though part of a set. Love Your Enemy was stitched with an open spine and bound with magnetic covers to represent the rawness and tension that intolerance creates.

Framework EXPLORING PLACES FAR AWAY AND UNKNOWN.

Number

To create a calendar using experimental typography that was both func-tional as well as beautiful. This is a challenge that is often found in design, how to create something that is usable and still pleasing to the eye. Size and spacing must play a large part in the design.

Voyage, 2012 chronicles a journey around the world spanning 14 countries on four continents over the course of 100 days. A variety of languages, cultures, and climates were visited which is expressed visually through ty-pography and images. Each month is written in the country’s corresponding language and has an abstracted version of the latitude and longitude of its location. To add a personal level, excerpts from a travelogue kept during the voyage are included. The layout of each month allows the calendar to be fully functional and includes holidays and phases of the moon.

Every thing in Tokyo feels more delicate than other major cities. I can’t really explain it but it is all a little more beautiful that in New York or San Francisco. It was cherry blossom week and the whole city was just raining with petals. It gave the streets a pink tint and people walked over the fallen blossoms and crushed them as they hurried about their daily errands and important business.

Fra m e w o r k A BRAND NEW ERA OF HEALTH ANDQUALITY NUTRITION.

Nu m b e r

04

To define, research, distill, and solve a current social problem impacting the United States. After much research, this project sought to determine plausible solutions for the current poor quality of food served in United States public schools.

Learn and Live uses black and white photography and rich colors to por-tray the poor state of our public schools and the amazing potential that they have for improvement. A clean, friendly aesthetic and playful foldout sections throughout the book help to keep the serious issue from being too heavy. By combining help from the community, a fresh look at nutrition, and an increased interest across the country this issue has the potential to make some serious improvements within the school system and hopefully start children out on a better nutritional path.

To update the branding and web site of Angie Cao, a San Francisco based photographer. She wanted to maintain the spirit of her current brand while giving it a new, fresh, and welcoming look that captured the food and inte-riors that she so beautifully photographs.

Angie is a well established local photographer that specializes in warm, com-forting, feminine photography. Her work encapsulates the small joys that make a house welcoming and comfortable. Her new handwritten identity helps to portray the friendliness that Angie’s images so easily communicate. It was important that her photographs were the main highlight on the web-site so a clean, easy-to-navigate interface was used. The navigation expands and retracts so as to not take away from the images.

The Ultimate Self Destruction of Love In the Films of Woody Allen, was a showcase of Woody Allen’s greatest films of love and heartbreak. The design pieces were based off of five films being screened at the Angelica in New York City on Valentines Day. The look and feel of the project reflect-ed Allen’s dry, sarcastic humor regarding love and the inevitably breakup that always seemed to be looming around the corner. A typewriter was used for much of the typography to give in a more personal feel.

To design web experiences for a variety of clients. Each one required a very specific and distinct wish for visitors to the site. They must clearly com-municate a vision and purpose upon arrival and have a simple and easy to use navigation that allows the user to explore.

Each client had a significant amount of information to include on their site, which required the designs to have multiple layers of navigation. All three had a variety media including sounds, video, and written content. This influenced the architecture of the site, allowing for multiple types of pages and several levels of information. Coincidentally, community partic-ipation was a large requirement of all three so live feeds, user comments, and submissions all had to be taken into account. Each site ended up with a unique visual style that spoke to their organization or person.

Fra m e w o r k THE BEAUTY AND MAJESTY OF OUR NATURAL WORLD.

Nu m b e r

08

To rebrand a defunct company and bring it back to life. The United States National Parks system has been struggling for years and is currently suffer-ing from park closures and decreased staffing across the country. Rebrand-ing the park system will help to revitalize our national treasure.

The United States is home to some of the most beautiful natural and urban landscapes in the world which play host to a variety of activities such as extreme sports, hiking, and tourism. The current park system looks out-dated and does little to inspire new visitors to their parks. The new brand, shortened to US Parks, brings a fresh look and feel by using strong imagery, a more exciting language, and expanding into further reaching markets. This new portrayal of an American classic helps to make our parks more relevant in an increasingly digital world.

Fra m e w o r k THE INSPIRATIONAL MINDS OF OUR GLOBAL WORLD.

Nu m b e r

Framework A NEW VISUAL PLATFORM FOR STUDENT SUCCESS.

Number

10

To develop, and design a project that solves a problem in a unique way. Today teachers struggle with increasing class sizes, broadening needs, and decreased funding but are expected to turn out the same results. The chal-lenge was to find a way to address many of these needs in an impactful way.

Checkmark is a visual platform for teachers that allows them to record, or-ganize, and interpret student data. It helps them to identify problem areas and more effectively communicate them to other educators and student families. Currently, teachers are using a variety of archaic web tools to help them record data and have to spend time gathering the different sources together in order to get an accurate snapshot of each student. Checkmark streamlines this process and provides clear visual depictions of student per-formance to be used during grading and assessment.
