ROSE CARE CORNER for April 2014
by Phyllis Henslin, Consulting Rosarian
April is the month of beautiful roses. Our rose gardens are in full bloom and there are several rose shows in
the area where you can either enter your roses in a rose show or just go and look at all the award winning
roses. It’s also a good time to grab your camera and take pictures of your garden and individual roses. Pic-
tures help you remember the good performers and the bad ones you may want to replace next year. Remem-
ber: Glendale Rose Show April 5th
and Phoenix Rose Show April 19th
. I encourage you to cut some blooms and
enter them in these Rose Shows. See you there!!
You want your roses to remain fresh for as long as possible as you pick them. When you cut a stem from a
bush, an air bubble will immediately lodge in the stem and will not allow it to take up water. Take a bucket of
clean water with you as you cut your blooms and submerge each cut stem in the water. Then make a new cut
under the water before you put them in a vase. Now the stem will be able to take up water and the bloom will
last longer.
Springtime also brings infestations of thrips and aphids that cause buds to not open properly and brown edg-
es to appear on the petals. Aphids are green and cluster on the bud and also on the stem just below the bud.
Thrips are tiny insects within the bud, difficult to see, and damage the blooms from within. Using your water
wand to blast off the aphids with a strong blast of water will generally keep them under control. To control
thrips and a severe infestation of aphids you can just spritz the buds with Bayer Advanced Rose & Flower In-
sect Killer.
Spider Mites may also start to appear on your roses. They love hot dry weather. They are very tiny difficult to
see insects that will collect by the hundreds on the underside of the rose leaves. Spider mites suck juice
from the leaves, create a web on the underside of the leaves and leave them rusty looking. They start on the
lower part of the bush and work their way up. The easiest way to control spider mites is with a strong blast of
water from your water wand every 3 t o 4 days (both the underside and top of the leaves). A water wand is a
must in everyone’s rose garden.
Fertilizer: Your roses are growing and putting out those beautiful blooms so they need to be fed. There are
several fertilizers you can use, it’s your choice. Arizona Best Citrus Food is an economical granular fertilizer
to use or if you prefer a water soluble fertilizer, use Magnum Grow or Miracle Gro. Adding 1 TBS. of fish emul-
sion to 1 gallon of water and applying it to your roses will add size and color to the blooms.
Water: Temperatures are rising so adjust your watering schedule. Remember: Without sufficient water, roses
will not survive. WATER, WATER, WATER, Roses love & need water!
Thought for the month;
My garden was great last week,
sorry you missed it.

Want to know a Secret?????
The annual end of pruning party for all the volunteers who help make our MCC Rose Garden a place of
beauty was held on Saturday March 8th
. The dedication of a garden bench in honor of Milt and Betty Lee
was also held with a special ribbon cutting ceremony. Milt and Betty were instrumental in the fund rais-
ing and development of the Rose Garden. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for enjoying a delicious
lunch and finishing the day with awarding volunteer pins to several who hit milestones and topped off
with a raffle that allowed everyone to pick something of their choosing from the raffle table.
15 year volunteer pin was awarded to:
Steve Sheard
10 year volunteer pin was awarded to:
Jimmy Tribby and Janis Carbett
5 year volunteer pins were awarded to:
Bill Lum
Gary Thomas
Cathy Oplaski
Marie Harris
Congratulations to all and Thank You for your dedicated service.
I encourage each and everyone to bring family and friends and take time to walk through the Rose Gar-
den and take time to Smell the Roses. With our unusual warm weather, the garden is starting to bloom
early this year and should provide many weeks of beauty for all to enjoy.
This secret is in the garden, Can you find it??

ROSE SHOWS
In April, we will have three rose Shows. The Rose Society of Glendale will have their show on April 5th.
The Rose Society of Tucson will have their show on the 12th
of April and The Phoenix Rose Society will
have their show on the 19th
of April.
What a great opportunity to share our love of roses with other Society members.
There is a category for everyone.
Hybrid Teas, Floribundas Shrubs, Climbers, Miniflora and Miniatures. You can enter one rose, three ros-
es or sprays. One of the most popular is the most fragrant rose. For those who have damaged foliage or
a little mildew, we have Rose Bowls, Picture Frames, English Boxes and Artists Palettes.
You can enter a photo of one rose, a spray, a garden or an arrangement.
Then we have rose arrangements. You can enter in the Traditional, Modern or Oriental category.
There is truly something for everyone. So come to the Rose Shows and share some of your roses with
your fellow rose society members and the public as well.
