HINTS FOR MENTORS.
Tips for mentees.
#1 IT’S A BIG RESPONSIBILITY.
BE COMMITTED.Change your mentor, if (s)he does not have time for
you. But remember, it’s a two way street.
#2BELIEVE IN YOUR MENTEE.
A GOOD MENTOR CAN MAKE IMPOSSIBLE
POSSIBLE.Find someone who believes in you, both personally and
professionally.
#3BE HONEST AND UNAFRAID
TO TELL HARD TRUTHS- THINKING ABOUT MENTEE’S BEST.
.Hard discussions are not necessary bad discussions. They can make a dramatic positive change in your (working)
life.
#4HELP YOUR MENTEE
NAVIGATE THE POLITICS AND AVOID THE LAND
MINES.Find someone who knows the organization culture and
the ”unofficial” hierarchy.
#5GIVE CONCRETE GUIDANCE
WHEN NEEDED. Don’t hesitate to ask stupid questions.
#6 HAVE YOUR OWN
MENTOR(S) AND BUILD YOUR NETWORK.
Mentoring is everywhere. You can have several mentors with different roles in your life. Take a chance.
#7 LISTEN.
BE COMPASSIONATE.
Don’t be afraid to let down your guard and to share your insecurities and/or needs, wants, feelings.
#8 HAVE PATIENCE.
Have patience. Miracles are few and far between.
#9 MENTORING DOES NOT
ONLY HAPPEN IN A FORMAL PROCESS.
Your mentor can be anyone, anywhere. Ideally we all are mentors and mentees throughout our careers/life.
#10 DO NOT WASTE YOUR
MENTEE’S TIME (AND LIFE).Get ridd off lousy mentor
– unmotivated mentors do more harm than good.
