Lab Information

Umm Al-Qura UniversityCollege of Engineering & Islamic ArchitectureMechanical Engineering Department

In the lab section of engineering drawing course, students will apply drawing theories tought in lectures on Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) applications.

Engineering Drawing 1 handouts are availables in University copy centre.

Lab Grades distribution:• Exercises 10%

• Every week students are assigned to perfrom selected exersices from handouts. Assignments will be graded at the end of lab session by TA’s.

• Midterm Exam 5 %• Midterm is scheduled to be conducted during 12th week in computer lab

Advantages of CADD 1 of 2

• Increase in the productivity of the designer.• Improve the quality of the design.• Better communications.• Creating documentation of the designing.• Creating the database for manufacturing.• Ability to create digital prototypes as oppose to costly physical

prototypes.• Perform simulation including motion simulation, static

simulation and finite elements analysis.

AutoDesk Inventor Professional software package

Autodesk Inventor is a software used for 3D modeling

and 2D drawing. Inventor is a powerful CADD tool used

for basic product design idea or virtual prototype with

its complete set of drawings.

Getting started with AutoDesk Inventor

Invertor has many types of files. Each type serves for specific purpose. Files type are:• Part files• Assembly files• Presentation files• Drawing files

11

Part Files

Part files are used to create single parts and sheet metal parts. Parts(components) can be combined to create complex assembly. Part files have the file extension .ipt.

12

Assembly Files

Assembly files are used to create assemblies and subassemblies. Parts and subassemblies used to build an assembly are known as components. Assembly files have the extension .iam

13

Presentation Files

Presentation files are used to create exploded, animated, and stylized assembly models that show how separate parts and subassemblies interact within the full assembly. Presentation files have an .ipn extension.Umm Al-Qura UniversityCollege of Engineering & Islamic ArchitectureMechanical Engineering Department

14

Drawing Files

Drawing files are used to create 2D drawings. Drawings reference existing part, assembly, and presentation files. Drawing files can have the extension .idw or .dwg
