Why?● Goal: ensure that every child is successful and prepared

for the next school year

● Pandemic impacted student learning in a variety of ways○ Reduction in instructional time○ Challenges with remote learning○ Challenges with increased reliance on technology

● Provide additional learning time and support so that students are ready to move to the next grade level

What?● Half day, instructional program● Intensive focus on essential skills in math and language arts

● Transportation provided● Grab and go meals provided

Elementary Middle

Math: 1 hour 15 minLanguage Arts: 1 hour 30 min

Math: 1 hour 15 minLanguage Arts: 1 hour 15 min

How?● Curriculum (essential SOLs) and supporting resources

provided and organized by grade level

● All teachers will have access to the curriculum for each grade level, allowing teachers to match instruction to students’ instructional level

● Students’ instructional levels will be identified by current teacher and communicated with summer school staff

When?● June 7 - July 1

● Monday - Thursday

Elementary Secondary

● 3 Hours of Instruction a Day

● Morning and Afternoon Sessions

○ 8:45 AM - 12:15 PM

○ 12:45 PM - 4:15 PM

● 119 Total Sections

● 3 Hours of Instruction a Day

● 1 Session with 2 Instructional Blocks

○ 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

○ 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

● Mid-Day Break for Lunch and Activity

● 24 Total Sections

Elementary

Who?● 1,192 Students in grades K - 5 who

○ need some additional learning time○ have struggled completing work and/or are

working below grade-level expectations

● 89 Teachers● 42 Instructional Aides

Where?● Each elementary school will host their own program

○ Due to renovations, BES, CES, and CPS will hold their programs at FBES

Middle School

Who?● 209 Students in grades 6 - 8 who are not prepared for the next

grade level:○ Failed Math and/or English (below 50% avg)○ MAP scores indicate working below grade-level expectations ○ Performance level on Reading and/or Math SOL tests indicate

knowledge and skills are “Below Basic”

● 6 Math Teachers● 6 English Teachers● 7 Special Education Teachers ● 4 Instructional Aides

Where?

Middle School Summer Academy will be held at Christiansburg High School

for all students from AMS, BMS, CMS, and SMS
