A MESSAGE FROM RABBI KRAUSS
Dear Parents,
One of the most common questions I receive
Mazal Tov
To Gordie Kolb on his Bar
Mitzvah.
around this time of year from
colleagues and friends outside
of our community is "why
does SAR have school on Chol
Hamoed?"
Watching the activities,
tefillot, Sukkah hops, special
learning programs, pre simchat torah
celebrations, meals in the Sukkah, Chagigot
and communal Hallel recitations over the past
three days has served as a wonderful
reinforcement to me of why we do this.
Deeply rooted in our mission as a school is to
allow for positive experiential learning,
practicing what we teach, and finding
opportunities to learn in meaningful ways
outside of the traditional classroom. I hope
that these experiences and lessons made
their way into your homes, and I think we can
join together with pride that we were able to
combine school and chag with the right
balance and to enrich both.
A special thank you is due to our entire staff
for developing creative programs, planning
fun and substantive trips and activities, and
spending additional time during the busy yom
tov season to enhance our children's chag.
Wishing you and your children a Shabbat
Shalom and Chag Sameach.
Rabbi Binyamin Krauss

ACADEMY NEWS
Sukkot at SAR
Chol HaMoed Sukkot found our students busy with an array of interesting
programs and fun activities. The rainy weather did not deter the children from
playing on inflatables in the field, going on “sukkah hops” or eating lunch in the
sukkah.
There were also a multitude of indoor activities related to the chag. The fifth grade
tried their hands at making their own sukkot….out of cookies & candy! In the ELC
the students decorated their “in-class”sukkah and got to say the brachot on the
lulav & etrog.
The 8th grade went to the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale
to share a Sukkot meal and learn with seniors,
while 5th graders celebrated with a chagiga.
7th graders Sukkah hopped in Riverdale,
while the kindergarten got ready for the next chag—Simchat Torah!
Finally, the sun appeared and the 7th graders enjoyed a hike.
Everyone at SAR had a great week and we wish you all a Chag Sameach!
Sukkot Lunch & Learn
By: Liana Katz 8Z
On Thursday, the eighth grade had the amazing opportunity to visit and learn with
some of the older generation in the Riverdale community. We arrived at the
Hebrew Institute of Riverdale and split into small groups with our teachers to learn
some sources about having בטחון בהי , faith in G-d. Afterwards, we watched the
movie “Ushpizin” which portrayed the idea of בטחון בהי on the holiday of Sukkot.
Then we enjoyed a delicious lunch in the shul sukkah and listened to a few words
from the senior rabbi at the HIR, Rabbi Avi Weiss. Later we had the opportunity to
again break into small groups and teach the seniors some of the ideas we had
learned earlier in the day. Topping the fun off with some inter-generational singing
and dancing for the chag, it was truly זמן שמתנו!
First Grade Math Sukkah Field Day
On Friday, first graders were so excited to participate in their annual Math Sukkah
Field Day. This event has become a highlight of the year, and is the brainchild of
Morah Marci, who plans and supervises all the fun-filled activities. We were
fortunate that the weather was warm and beautiful, and the activities took place
on the lush SAR field. Students eagerly cheered on their teams whose names were
based on the themes of lulav, etrog, haddasim, aravot, sukkah, schach, stav, and
Tishrei.
Both English and Hebrew teachers supervised the group activities, and it was a
pleasure to participate in an inter-curricular (English/Hebrew) event. It was so
wonderful to hear and see the children singing, counting and dancing in Hebrew as
they played musical chairs with Hebrew numbers. Students also were able to
expend their physical and mental energies, running the sukkah themed obstacle
course, and winding their way through the various tally mark challenges. Ask your
children to recount the myriad ways in which they fulfilled these! The measuring
center was another hit. The students used cutouts of lulavim and etrogim to
measure and record their heights, their “wingspans,” and the circumference of
their heads and waists. In addition, they loved showing how far they could jump, in
measures of lulavim and etrogim! The fourth center of activity “see/run/build”
demonstrated the concept of team work. The students used geometric shapes to
recreate the sukkah, according to what the “see-er” saw behind the screen and
communicated to the “runner,” who brought the message to the “builders.” This
activity was also a great exercise in following directions closely, and fostered
communication skills.
The first grade Sukkah math field day is a chance to have fun, while learning math
concepts and celebrating the beautiful holiday of Sukkot. We would like to extend
our heartfelt thanks to Morah Marci, for planning and coordinating this very
successful annual event.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
What has been your favorite Sukkot activity?
THAT "KIND OF WEEK"
By Adina Hirschfield 6Z
Over Chol HaMoed the sixth grade did something similar to Leket in Israel. At
Abma's farm, we collected eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, and even jalapenos which
were going to be thrown away. The owner of the farm left it for us so that we could
do this mitzvah. We collected more than 48 bags of vegetables! We delivered half
to Buddies of New Jersey's food pantry. The other half we will give Tomchei
Shabbos, so that poor people can still have a meal for Shabbat. It felt good to do
this mitzvah, and we know we helped many people to have healthy food on their
tables for Shabbat or during the week.

DVAR TORAH
Why the Sukkah?
By: Lyla Waitman
One of the major mitzvot on Sukkot is to build and “live in” a sukkah. We are commanded to
eat in the sukkah for seven days. Some people even sleep in the sukkah. Why do we have
the mitzvah of living in a sukkah?
There are a few reasons. We are acting like בני ישראל, who lived in sukkot while traveling in
the dessert. Also, the sukkah symbolizes the ענני הכבוד (the cloud that ‘ ה rested on top of
Bnei Yisrael’s camp in order to protect them). Without ה', בני ישראל would not have been able
to make it through the desert safely. They depended on ‘ה for protection, security, and
survival. ‘ה would protect בני ישראל from enemies, provide them with food, and tell them where
and when to travel.
Nowadays, we might think that we do not depend on ‘ה as much as בני ישראל did when they
were traveling in the desert. We might think that because we live in secure houses with alarm
systems, we make our own food, and we choose when and where to drive, that we do not
need ‘ה to protect us. The sukkah reminds us that we are just as dependent on ‘ה as בני
.were in the desert. It symbolizes Hashem’s control over our fate and destiny ישראל
