On the Ryder Cup trailWhen the opportunity presented itself to cover Worksop’s most famous son, Lee Westwood, on arguably golf’s biggest stage, I took the decision as sports editor to attend the event and devote a two-page special to his contribution to Europe’s victory, including an exclusive interview with the man himself.

A Champion performanceNottinghamshire’s 2010 County Championship title win came as something of a surprise on the season’s final day, meaning there was a need to move swiftly to secure the required copy to file a back page lead and a double page spread before a looming deadline - all while keeping office colleagues in the loop.

Celebrating in styleWith just one week to produce an eight-page supplement from start to finish, work went on around the clock to produce a publication commemorating the Championship victory. It featured the tale of the final day, the six best moments from the season, interviews with key staff members and where the club went next.

By Royal AppointmentAs a reward for their County Championship triumph, Nottinghamshire had the honour to travel to London and meet the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace. Having been invited to accompany the team, what better way to sum up the day than with a fly-on-the-wall rundown of their big day?

A day to rememberThe 2011 FA Trophy final at Wembley was the first time Mansfield Town had played there since 1987. Coverage included a page lead and feature every day leading up to the big occasion, plus an eight-page special pull-out featuring interviews, stats, analysis and a look back to the club’s previous Wembley visit.

In at the deep endWith the Post invited to send a reporter to Rebecca Adlington’s final press meeting prior to London 2012, an in-depth interview was used for the paper’s ‘Weekend’ magazine. There was also an accompanying back page lead noting the Mansfield swimmer thought a world record was needed to retain her title.

Cricket goes corporateThe tone of the PCA’s corporate magazine is very specific and crucial to the securing of new sponsorships. Understanding the importance of brand values is key. Cover features with the likes of Jonathan Trott have been supported by pieces drafted in liaison with clients including NatWest, Buxton Water and FTI Consulting.

Leading from the frontThe Manager may be loosely centred around football, but it is read by all the sport’s major stakeholders and is a magazine that explores leadership and management issues. It leans heavily towards the business world for inspiration, meaning a versatility is needed in its writing to fuse together contrasting content.

Published authorWhen Mansfield Town reclaimed their place back in the Football League, it seemed the perfect opportunity to pen a first book – and make more than £4,000 for charity. It involved writing 250-plus pages (in excess of 100,000 words) in six weeks, as well as securing a printer, marketing and distributing the book.

Spinning a yarnBriefed to come up with an offbeat benefit brochure the likes of which had never been seen before, a concept of ‘What’s going on in Swanny’s head’ was devised for England’s charismatic off-spinner, with pieces on cricket, other sports, family, music and comedy, accompanied by traditional tributes.
