Maths Week

Maths Week October October 2010October 2010

Our theme for the week was Jack and the Beanstalk

We did lots of Maths activities linked to the story.

We started off by going out for a walk.

We were looking for different leaves to collect and sort, and all kinds of things to count.

What shape is this one?

We counted 28 ant hills ...

... don’t get too close!

45 frisky sheep (we think!) ...

... and lots of other things.

Then we got back to school and sorted our leaves by shape and size...

... and put them into graphs and charts.

Here are just some of the Maths activities we did over the week:

Practising our times tables by stacking coins into groups of 10 for counting. Our classroom looks like the giant’s treasure chamber!

We counted 40 000 pennies altogether. We counted 40 000 pennies altogether. How many pounds does that make?

Measuring the heights, arm length and leg length of every child in the school and entering them into a data base.

We found the height of an average child in school by adding up everyone’s height and dividing it by the number of children.

We made a giant that was exactly twice the height of the average child. He was 234 cms tall.

We made leaves to go on a Bean stalk and wrote our heights on each one. We stuck them on in order of size.

We used calculators to help us solve problems about the combination for the Giant’s safe...

... and cubes to help us work out how many different coloured outfits Jack could wear.

We enjoyed investigating 2D shapes.

Can you spot the picture we made of the Giant’s castle?

We designed a new floor for Jack’s mum’s kitchen using 2D shapes.

Can you see how we made the shapes tessellate?

We made a bridge out of newspaper to help Jack escape from the Giant.

How many rolls do you think we will need?

Our bridges had to support the weight of a Giant ...

...Teddy! How did we do?

Not too bad at all!

We finished off our Maths Week with a party.

We cut our sandwiches into fractions, and shared out our chocolate fingers evenly between each plate, and weighed out the ingredients to make our Golden Egg biscuits.

We had a great time in our Maths Week!
