Web Page Titles and Headers

● Importance is often overlooked

● For both readers and search engines:

○ They represent key concepts

○ They convey levels of importance

Elements of Compelling Titles

● Write for your potential clients● Descriptive but concise● Unique● Local

Compare:

“Vehicular manslaughter charges”

vs.

“Distracted Driving Accidents May Result in Vehicular Manslaughter Charges in San Diego”

Elements of Compelling Headers

● Write for your potential clients● Descriptive but concise● Unique● Local● Does the header tell you what’s

underneath without any additional context?

Compare:

“What happens?”

vs.

“What happens if you’re convicted of vehicular manslaughter in San Diego?”

Examples: Strong Titles

Scenario:

This potential client was injured in a car wreck in Nashville, but she was on the phone when the wreck occurred. She’s concerned she won’t be compensated because she was on the phone.

Instead of:

“Compensation For Car Accident Personal Injury Tennessee”

Try:

“Can I still get compensation for a car accident injury in Nashville if I was on the phone?”

Examples: Strong Titles

Scenario:

This potential client has recently been divorced. She’s got a good job and lots of assets. She wants to change her will.

Instead of:

“Estate Planning Attorney in Montana”

Try:

“How do I change my will after a divorce in Billings?”

Examples: Strong Headers

Page:

“If I’m driving in Maricopa County and I get into an accident, can my passenger sue me?”

Strong headers might look like:

● Determining liability in a one-car accident in Maricopa County

● Determining liability in a multiple-car accident in Phoenix

● If my passenger is a family member or friend, can they file a claim against my insurance policy in Arizona?

Examples: Strong Headers

Page:

“Will I go to jail if I’m arrested for a DUI in Denver?”

Strong headers might look like:

● An overview of penalties for DUI convictions in Denver

● When can you receive a suspended sentence for a DUI conviction in Denver?

● What happens if you violate your probation after a drunk driving conviction in Denver, Colorado?

Common Title/Header Mistakes

● Vague titles and headers

● Titles and headers that don’t include local elements

● Keyword-stuffed titles and headers

Compare:

“What You Need to Know About Fighting Felony Drug Charges in Reno, Nevada”

vs.

“Reno Criminal Defense Lawyer, Criminal Defense Lawyers, Criminal Defense Attorney, Reno

Criminal Defense Attorneys”
