Cliffs are also susceptible to mass movements. These can be slow or

sudden.

Waves attack the cliffs at the base, undercutting

them.

Takes place on soft rock.Rain saturates the top of

the cliff.

Rock slumps into the sea.

Takes place on harder rock, built up in layers. The top layer may become

saturated.

It slides over the layer beneath- rapidly moving

downhill.

Very fine loose material becomes saturated with

water and just flows down a slope.

Freeze-thaw weathering will shatter rocks from

cliffs- material will gather at the base.

Soil particles expand due to moisture. They are lifted at a right

angle away from the slope.

As they dry, they shrink, but the force of gravity pulls them

vertically down.

There is a slow downward movement of material over time.
