busy bodies are more than welcome at two new recreation attractions in Martinsville-Henry County.
Smith River Sports Complex has been open since July 2009, while the Dick & Willie Passage Rail Trail held its ribbon-cutting ceremony in October 2010. Both sites have already become popular destinations for sports fans and anyone looking to get in shape.
Complex situationSmith River Sports Complex is a $9.7 million
facility that was paid for by The Harvest Foundation.“The Harvest Foundation was formed in 2002 after
Martinsville Memorial Hospital was sold, and the foundation wanted to construct a sports complex to attract tournaments to our community to boost the economy,” says Billy Russo, Smith River Sports Complex director of operations.
The complex has six fields that include two with artificial turf, and the other four have Bermuda grass.
Sports played there include soccer, football, lacrosse, field hockey, ultimate frisbee, flag football and rugby. There is no baseball or softball.
“It has provided a good boost for the local economy,” Russo says. “For example, during the three months of fall 2010, the complex brought in $400,000 thanks to field rentals for tournaments, hotel rooms booked, restaurants visited and so forth.”
Many Out-of-statersBesides tournaments, the complex is ideal for local
athletics. The Carlisle School field hockey team plays its entire season on the artificial fields, and the Virginia Storm semi-pro football team also plays there. The complex is also home to the Piedmont Youth Soccer League.
“Big events we’ve also hosted include a soccer tournament for 70 youth teams in November 2010, and a lacrosse tournament in mid-2010 with people arriving from 17 states,” Russo says. “We’re even planning

a dog show and have held two weddings here – with another one coming up.”
4.5 Miles to exploreMeanwhile, the Dick & Willie Rail Trail has also
become a popular recreation destination, even in its short history. The trail stretches 4.5 miles over railroad tracks formerly owned by Danville & Western Railway, whose trains once chugged through Martinsville.
“The trail has been asphalted and is 10 feet wide, and it’s affectionately known as the Dick & Willie after the original engineer and the original conductor of the railway,” says Brian Williams, project manager with Dan River Basin Association, which partners with Henry County Parks and Recreation to oversee upkeep of the trail.
Williams says it’s perfect for anyone who wants to run, bike, rollerblade or push a stroller.
“The trail stretches from Virginia Avenue in
Martinsville at mile zero near Wal-mart, then dead-ends at Mulberry Creek,” he says. “A brochure will be ready around late 2011 to pinpoint all highlights of the trail.”
Pedaling right alongAn interesting aspect of the Dick & Willie Trail
is a service offered by Activate Martinsville-Henry County, a nonprofit organization that does a lot of good things in the community. Activate runs a Bike Barn on weekends so that residents can sign-out a bicycle for free, pedal it as long as they want and then return it.
“During the first half of 2011, more than 700 bicyclists utilized the free service,” Williams says. “Just park your car at a trailhead, get a bike and go. There are 30 really nice bikes to choose from, and the service is just another way to help keep our residents healthy.”

Thanks to a long-standing commitment to cutting-edge educational technology, local students from third grade through
high school are enjoying a technologically enhanced education that is drawing national attention.
“Technology is an integral part of the instructional fabric of our schools,” says Melany Stowe, communications coordinator for Henry County Public Schools. “For at least the last 10 years we have been putting infrastructure in place so that now we have almost a one-to-one student-to-computer ratio.”

beyond textbooksA rapidly expanding iPad
initiative, Beyond Textbooks, has helped make that ratio pop. In fall 2010, Henry County became one of four sites statewide to receive iPads for two fourth-grade classrooms, courtesy of the Virginia Department of Education, which provided the devices. Pearson, Five Ponds Press, Victory Productions, Adobe, MashON, McGraw-Hill and Inkling provided digital content, platforms and applications at no
cost to VDOE and the participating school divisions.
Impressed with the initial 40 iPads for two fourth-grade classes, the school system used federal stimulus funds to buy iPads for each fourth- and fifth-grade student to use, for eighth-grade history classes, and for two classroom sets that teachers can check out. In 2011-12, the system will have some 2,700 iPads.
“When I was in school, you turned the page and if there was a picture that was great,” Stowe says.
“These kids can pat a picture with their finger and a minute and a half movie pops up. They can zoom in to see events. They can listen to text. It’s transformational.”
Motorola Partners With Middle school
An innovative partnership with Motorola has given Laurel Park Middle School, the only school in the nation to be selected for the program, a vastly upgraded tech capability. The company provided

cell phones, computers and other equipment, and enhanced wireless infrastructure that gives homes in the surrounding area free Internet service. The program prompted the school to offer Saturday library hours for family access to computers and iPads that may be checked out.
nasa in the ClassroomSince 2002, Martinsville City
Public Schools have enjoyed a partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Martinsville
Middle School presents a special NASA-designed curriculum through its Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA), the only one of its kind in the state.
The 12-week elective, which nearly half the school’s students take, stresses hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering and math – subjects that once were stumbling blocks for the largely under-represented students in the system.
“We really want to target those students, get them interested in
these areas, get them interested in going to college,” says Ann Stultz, SEMAA site director. Hands-on activities are a great way to do that. “We can say to a student, ‘Hey, you liked building a bridge with eggs and sticks – maybe you’d like to think about architecture as a career’ and point them in the right direction.”
Results have been impressive. Math and science scores have improved dramatically, and now K-5 students are also enjoying SEMAA activities.

Business
When looking to relocate or expand, businesses have very specific
criteria they look for in a location. On the heels of several announcements of corporate expansions and recruitment, Martinsville-Henry County is proving to be an ideal location.
ICF International, a professional services and technology solutions firm, was looking for a home for its new $15 million operations center and needed a specific type of workforce, access to broadband communications and a nearby airport.
Frank Abramcheck, senior vice president of Fairfax-based ICF, says the best arrangement of all of his company’s requirements came together in Martinsville-Henry County.
“It had the workforce, the availability of appropriate real estate, the right incentive package, and I really do feel like we did get
alignment from the state officials and the Economic Development Corporation in Henry County,” he says. “Everything came together in a really strong way.”
The ICF announcement, which is set to bring more than 500 jobs to Henry County through 2014, is just one of several companies bringing jobs to the growing region over the next few years.
More henry County jobs on the horizon
RTI International Metals, a Pittsburgh, Pa.-based provider of titanium and specialty metals, has built a $100 million plant in Patriot Centre here that is set to add 150 jobs to its $120 million plant.
Even smaller companies looking to expand are finding the criteria to suit their expansions in the Martinsville-Henry County area.
Applied Felts, an independent manufacturer of felt liners for the cured-in-place pipe industry, is investing $6 million in its home
base of Henry County, which will add another 40 new jobs to the area.
Charlie Mattox, general manager of Applied Felts, says Henry County provides a good road system for moving inventory in and out, as well as high-end electrical design support – both key factors in his decision to expand at home and not look at a new location.
“We also have employees who really care about what they are doing,” Mattox says. “They are dedicated workers who don’t mind working long and hard. I think this area offers a good quality of life. It’s a good environment for families.”
Corporate Consolidations bring jobs home
Southern Finishing, a Martinsville-based manufacturer of pre-finished components for the cabinet industry, has invested $1.7 million to consolidate its operations to the city of Martinsville. The company

is set to bring its manufacturing and distribution operations to a building across the street from its existing location, expecting to save more than 100 jobs and create 67 new ones.
Southern Finishing executives cited the availability of affordable space and a labor force with wood industry experience in the area as criteria they needed, that Henry County easily met.
Drake Extrusion, manufacturer of polypropylene fiber, is another local company that has added jobs recently. Overall, it has expanded five times since opening its facility here in 1995.
Mattox of Applied Felts says of the Martinsville-Henry County area that as an outsider coming to the area 14 years ago, from day one he was overwhelmed by the community support.
“From the beginning I felt that we are in a small town with really big-city services,” he says. “I still think that way.” t
