Why Engineering at Medway?

How to do Engineering

Take an idea for a new product or system.

E.g. networked communication system.

Put idea into production.

Sell lots of these.

Get rich!

General Engineering R&D

New idea arrives. List the specifications. Research methods & hardwares &

softwares. Implementation. Produce prototype. Evaluate prototype. UNTIL

Final implementation of the Idea.

Engineering Technologies

Need to understand how one system works and its requirements.

Need to know how systems may be networked together.

Need to know how to write software and converse with software engineers.

Need to know how to present your ideas.– PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Rhetoric etc.

Network Engineering involves:

Problem solving. Subject knowledge. Following industry standard configurations

and protocols. Measurement and planning of network and

system requirements and resources. Lateral thinking to combine different

technologies.

Tools Available to Students

Virtual Machines for network hacking.– Wireshark, nmap, metasploit, brute force attacks.– Windows & LINUX servers.

Netlab server for router configuration. Cisco Packet Tracer for network design. Free operating system & application

downloads.

Cisco CCNA and CCNP

Available to all Engineering students. Will take 1 year to complete CCNA. Involves much hands-on work. Making cables, troubleshooting, router
