Housekeeping
PRIDE time ACE day tomorrow, 5 Oct.

Quiz retakes can be scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, &

Salinity
Water is an excellent solvent.
All water that exists on Earth is carrying materials with it.
Where do the materials within the ocean come from?
• Land
• Inside the Earth
• The atmosphere
Materials in the Ocean
Land:
• Streams & rivers flow into the ocean.
• 4 billion tons of salt into the
ocean each year.
• Evaporation leaves behind
salts.

Materials in the Ocean
Inside the Earth:
• Volcanoes, vents, & other
processes provide minerals.
• Come from deep within the
Earth’s surface.

Materials in the Ocean
The atmosphere:
• Minerals can be carried on
the wind & deposited into the
ocean.
• Natural (volcanic ash) &
human-made substances.

Salinity
Water is generally considered fresh or salty.
• Somewhere in between is called brackish.
Brackish water is usually found in areas called estuaries.
Estuaries
Estuaries = areas where fresh (stream & rivers) & salt
water (seas & oceans) meet.
• Sometimes called the “nurseries of the sea” because
many juvenile organisms grow here.
Lab Activity
Investigating Surface Tension:
• Be sure to carefully following instructions within the lab
worksheet.
• If you have a question about the lab please ask before
continuing.
Complete in your notebook:
Fill in the data tables & draw a graph of the data.
Answer follow up questions 2-3.
Read the Cohesion section & answer questions 8-9.
Entry Task
What property of water is caused by the attraction of water
molecules?
How is this associated with your lab & surface tension?
Lab Activity
Surface Tension Lab Packet:
Complete:
Fill in the data tables & draw a graph of the data.
Any questions found within the lab itself.
Answer follow up questions 2-3.
Read the Cohesion section & answer questions 8-9.
Entry Task
Take your notebook out & prepare to Think, Pair, & Share.
What features can you identify in this image? What do you think
it is?
Where do you think this place is located?

Explore the Seafloor
Now pair with your partner (the one right next to you).
• Discuss what features you identified & what you think it is.
• Note similarities & differences.
• Did you each come up with different locations?
