OurWelcomeBreakfastSpeakerinTypicalSavannahDress
Ourannual2016seminarwasheldinSavannahwith42chemists,threegasfreeengineersandthreetraineesinattendance.IntotaltheMCAhadover100participantsattheseminar.Chemistattendancewasaboveouraverageof34chemistsbasedonnumbersgoingbackto1966,infactthelasttimeanannualseminarexceeded40chemistswasin2000.WhileSavannahwashotandsteamy,theseminarwasasuccessbasedonthemanypositivecommentsintheevaluationforms.Thisyeartheseminarcenteredonfireandexplosionhazards.OnMondaywechangedupthenormalformat.Wehadourwelcomebreakfastfollowedbythebusinessmeeting.Thenweallowedtwohoursfortheinsuranceluncheon.Manychemistsbelongtothefundandtheyrecentlyupdatedtheirby-laws.KenMercer577,chairmanofthefundgaveanoverviewonthestateofthefundandWellsFargorepresentative,KristenRichendifergaveapresentation

onhowthefundworksforus.Thiswasfollowedbythefund’slongtimeattorney,DaleKingmanwhogavesomeadviceonitemstocheckonwhenreviewingcontracts.(Thepresentationisavailableonthewebsite)FollowingthisAmyWangdahl,OSHA’sDirectorofMaritimeandAgriculturegaveanupdateoncurrentissuesinthemaritimeareaalongwithanenforcementupdate.OnTuesday,webeganourtechnicalpresentations.AwiderangeofspeakersincludingourownPhilipDovinh667andGregGrondin676gavepresentations.Inmostlikelyafirst,JennyMoore,wifeofchemistEricMoore626gaveapresentationontheBasicsofFireExtinguishment.JennyisanarsoninvestigatorfortheLakeJacksonPoliceandFireDepartment.ThiswasfollowedbypresentationsbyBobKambonStaticChargeIsolationonVessels,BobwasthemaininstructorattheLNGseminarthisspringinNewport.LT.WilliamCottafromtheUSCGgaveapresentationonFireSafetyDesignandMitigationonLNGVessels,WilliamLawrence,atFMGlobaloverseesintrinsicallysafetestingandgaveapresentationonhazardouslocationclassificationsandwhatitmeansforaninstrumenttobeclassifiedasintrinsicallysafeorexplosionproof.Finally,onWednesdaymorningpresentationsweregivenbyLarryRussellandGuyColonnaonFire,ExplosionsandConsequencesalongwithExplosionsandDeflagrations.Thisendedthetechnicalsession.Allpresentationsarepostedonourwebsite.DuringthewelcomebreakfastwehadaspeakerfromtheSavannahCoastalHeritageSocietygiveapresentationonthehistoryofSavannah.SpeakerRayChristiewasveryentertainingandheldtheattentionofeveryone.TheMCAthankstheSocietyforprovidingagreatspeakeralongwiththeirhelponadvisingtheMCAonthingstodowhileinthecity.DuringbreakfasttwoindividualswererecognizedfortheiroutstandingservicetotheMCA.ThefirstwasRobertClinton,alongtimememberoftheMarineGasHazardsControlProgramandFund.Bobretiredthisyearaftermanyyearsofserviceinthemaritimeindustryrangingfromcaptaintosafetydirector.Wewishhimwellinhisretirement.Thesecondindividualiswellknowntousall;LesBlaizeourassistantsecretarywasalsorecognized.LeshasbeeninvolvedwiththeMCAformanyyears.Heservedontheexecutiveboardandthenaschairman.HeworkedwithEdWillwerthashisassistantsecretaryandstillservesastheassistantsecretary.Heisonthe306technicalcommitteerepresentingtheMCAasaprincipalandalsoontheinsurancecommittee.Itgoeswithoutsayingthathisservicetousandtheindustryhasbeenexceptional.Whiledoingallofthis,hismainfunctiontakesplaceduringtheannualseminarswherehetakesontheheavyresponsibilityofensuringthatthesocialactivitiesforyourwives,spousesandsignificantothersgosmoothlyandareentertaining.Everyoneknowsthatifyourspouseisnothappy,thenyouarenothappy.Finally,Lesisalsoinchargeofthewristcharmsfortheladies.Hesearchesoutcharmsthatareofsignificancetothelocationsoftheseminars,ordersandinstallsthemforall.Hedoes
