From The Desk Of Our Basileus After the Strategic Plan, now what?
Dear Sorors, thank you again for approving the DBO Stra-
tegic Plan. Our process began in last August with the
support of Soror Barbara Whye at the Veora E. Johnson
Leadership Institute. Now that we are nearing the end of
exhaustive planning process I am beginning to wonder,
“Now what?” We’ve all experienced the moment when
the writing bliss wears off and overwhelm creeps in as we
begin to think about making our plan come to life.
Even after approval the question may not be: Will you
marry me? Does DBO or my committee have enough ca-
pacity to pursue its goals, (funding raising efforts, volun-
teers, time and access)? As a Chapter we now face our most
critical challenge: How do you get the all of our members on board? Are we ready to
make the commitment and buy-in to forge ahead? Will we be able to manage our com-
mittee activities and motivate ourselves and each other to embrace follow through and
accountability through project completion?
Now is the time for us to act with due diligence to report progress to our Sorors and
other community members? Everything we do can affect change in our community
when do our part, especially when we work with a positive attitude.
We must remember that we are not done writing, but remain in the planning process to
not allow dust to accumulate on the copy and leave it buried on the shelf. I challenge
and encourage each committee to review the plan in your meeting before June 30th, and
identify practical steps and considerations to ensure that all of your goals and activities
become a part of DBO’s strategic plan implementation.
Good preparation leads to good implementation.

DBO MEDITATION
Heart Gifts It’s not the things that can be bought That are life’s richest treasures; It’s just the little “heart gifts” That money cannot measure— A cheerful smile, a friendly word, A sympathetic nod, All priceless little treasures From the storehouse of our God— They are the things that can’t be bought With silver or with gold, For thoughtfulness and kindness And love are never sold— They are the priceless things in life For which no one can pay, And the giver finds rich recompense In giving them away Source: A Collection of Blessings Prayer: Lord, may nothing separate us from You today. Teach me how to choose only Your way today so each step will lead us closer to You. Help us to walk by the Word and not our feelings. Help us to keep our hearts focused on our mission and our pur-pose. Let us be careful in thoughts, words, and actions—and continue to show love toward our sisterhood. Help us to valiantly embrace what comes our way as an op-portunity for our great chapter: Delta Beta Omega. And finally, we ask your contin-ued grace upon Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Lord, help us to forever remember what a gift it is to be of service to all mankind. Amen. Blessings, Sorors! Soror Victoria Jones, Chaplain

HEALTH NEWS
11
Hello Ladies. I want to thank you all for signing up for the 2017 FitPearls Weight Loss Challenge. The new year is almost here and the challenge of reclaiming our health is now. This is a great opportunity to team up with a workout buddy as well as schedule group workouts and boot camps. I want to encourage everyone to develop a goal and a plan that will work for your daily life. Specifically nutrition and exercise. Over the years I have learned that 70% of weight loss is nutrition. So if you never workout, you can still lose weight. Exercise definitely expedites the process and creates healthier results for the heart, circulation, metabolism, muscle tone and development. So I strongly suggest focusing on both nutrition and exercise. The first weigh-in will be held before the January sorority meeting from 12pm - 1pm. If you would like to start prior to that date, like Jan 1st, please just weigh yourself on your own scale. Then just email or text me your starting weight. We believe in the honor system. Smile. Also, I have attached a copy of the spreadsheet I will be using to track your monthly weigh-ins and calculating the % weight loss. Feel free to save and track your own progress. The spreadsheet also has a list w/ contact info of everyone that has signed up for the challenge. (Let me know if you need an older excel version of the spreadsheet) If you are on Facebook, please join the new group - "AKA-DBO FitPearls Weight Loss Challenge". We will share info, success stories, recommendations, recipes, fitbit chal-lenge results, etc. on this page. Happy New Year FitPearls!!! Soror Mia 205-266-5949
