Superintendent’s
Corner
Security in
Bond Money the Building
In response to parent and staff concerns, and
current times, a few changes have been made
over the past couple of months with our
building security. For example, as mentioned
in the phone Message to Parents the other day,
there are new procedures for students coming
to school prior to 8:00. In addition, a sign is
being placed in the front entrance to remind
visitors to come to the main office and sign in.
We are requesting you let the receptionist
know the reason you are here. If you come to
drop something off for your child, leave it
with the receptionist who will make sure your
child gets it. If you are picking up homework,
make sure the Guidance office knows, so they
can leave it in the Main office for when you
arrive. If you need to speak to your child’s
teacher, please schedule an appointment with
them. When you come to school and sign in,
the receptionist will call the teacher to make
sure they are available. A scheduled meeting
allows them to give you the time you deserve
to address all matters.
Although we are a small community and some
of these precautions may not seem necessary,
unfortunately, we have all seen how small
communities have been devastated with
unthinkable acts of violence. I feel your child
deserves all possible precautions to help keep
them safe.
Another note regarding safety:
One of the hardest decisions we face is
making the decision to delay, cancel, or keep
school open during bad weather. Prior to
making the decision, we consult with several
people, including the Town and County
Highway Superintendents, and also review
several weather forecasts. This does not mean
we know what the roads are like at your
house. Our district is one of the largest in the
area and we can have several different climate
zones within it. It can be raining in
Wevertown while snowing in North River or
vice versa. The main roads can be clear while
the dirt roads have an inch of ice on them. If
there is a time when school is open, but you
are not comfortable sending your child, then
please don’t. I will respect whatever decision
you make.
If you have any thoughts or concerns about
student safety, please let us know. Student
safety will always be important at JCS.
Principal’s
Message March brings with it a
promise of warm sunny
days and the beginning of
spring. A few signs of
spring for me are the
sounds of the birds in the
trees and being able to roll
my car window down to
take a deep breath of warm
spring air!
Cracker Barrel is Here
Again!
The Board of Education
invites JCS staff, students,
and community members
to come and share their
thoughts on several topics
concerning JCS.
Examples of topics are
safety, curriculum,
technology,
communication, sports,
and more…
When: March 2nd
Time: 6:00PM
Where: JCS Cafetorium
Red Thursdays!
Wear RED on Thursdays
to help support our Anti-
bullying Awareness Day!
Keep your eyes out for our
new paintings on the walls
of the Olweus rules and a
tree with each of our
students hand print as
leaves symbolizing all of
our students working
together to help stop
Bullying.
New Safety Procedures!
Please note the following
new safety procedures
that have been
implemented since
February 22, 2016.
All parents/visitors
must use the front
entrance to access
the building during
normal school
hours. (8:00 to
2:40)
You will be asked
to push a buzzer
and give your name
and why you are
here by our main
office personnel.
After being
prompted to come
through the second
set of doors, it is
extremely
important that you
go directly into the
Main office and
sign in.
If you are dropping
an item off, please
leave it in the Main
office and we will
get it to your
child’s classroom.
If you are picking
up your child,
please sign in and
go directly to the
Principal’s office
where you will
meet your child
unless it is stated
they are in the
nurse’s office. You
will need to sign
your child out
before leaving.
Morning Drop Off
Parents: If you are still
walking your child in the
building in the morning,
please note the change in
procedure:
All Elementary
students in grades
kindergarten
through sixth grade
and their parents
have the option of
saying good-bye at
the south door or
may walk them to
the cafetorium prior
to the class being
opened at 7:45 in
the morning.
There, they will
wait until they are
released by the
cafeteria monitor to
go to their
elementary
classroom by
themselves.
We have Hall
Monitors
throughout the
building to make
sure your child is
safe.
If you need to
speak with your
child’s teacher,
please send a note
in with your child
to have the teacher
contact you with a
time to meet. A
scheduled meeting
is more beneficial
to make sure
adequate time is
available to address
all concerns.
All exterior doors,
including the main
entrance are locked
from 8:00-2:40.
Thank you for your
cooperation in helping our
school become a safe place
to learn.
Walking Our Halls
It is nice to see community
members walking the halls
getting their daily exercise
during the winter months.
I hope you will soon join
us outside walking our
fitness trail around our
fields. There are stations
to exercise along the way.
Give it a try!

Coach’s Corner
1. A big shout out to our Nordic skiers, Coach Tomb and Coach Julie for making lemonade
out of a lemon of a winter! They trained hard and made the best of the lack of snow and
showed the league and the section just what a little school can do when they set their
minds to it! Congratulations to all of you!
2. Another shout out to Seamus Tomb who made the state team for Nordic and competed in
Lake Placid on February 22 & 23! Congratulations Seamus!
3. One more shout out to the Boys Nordic team for finishing third behind Queensbury and
Shen at Sectionals! Again, little school power can be strong when we pull together!
4. A thank you again to our senior students/athletes and their parents who were honored on
two different nights. We thank you again for your dedication and support of our
programs over the years. You will be missed next year!
5. We would like to acknowledge the following people for their help throughout our winter
season; Tracy Watson and Amy Cleveland for running the concession stand at our boys
games and Sam Allison for helping to groom the field as well as the Ski Bowl for our
Nordic team! A sincere thank you to all for your help. We could not have done it
without you!
6. Spring seasons will open on March 7 for Varsity Baseball, Tennis, and Softball and
March 14 for Modified teams! Please make sure your student/athlete has an updated
physical on file in the nurse’s office – No Physical, No Play!
7. The coaches for the spring season are as follows: Varsity Baseball – Coach Snide;
Modified Baseball – Coach Maiorana; Varsity Softball – Coach Cavanagh; Modified
Softball – Coach Gonyo; and Tennis – Coach Flanagan.
8. Please always check with school if the weather is bad because games can be cancelled
with very little notice! You do not want to drive to Keene for no reason.
9. Reminder: As we start a new season, please see the coach first if your student/athlete is
having a problem, then the athletic director, and then if need be, we will meet with
Administration. Thank you!
10. For the students/athletes: Please remember – School Comes First Before Sports!
You must be in school every day on time. If you have a doctor’s appointment, you must
bring a note stating such. If you’re too sick to come to school, you should not be at
practice. Your academics come first then your sport!
11. Once again, thank you for a memorable winter season. We will see you on the field and
courts soon!

JCS Welcomes
Interim Music Teacher
My name is Katy
Cole. I am a 2002
graduate of
Johnsburg Central
School. I am an
accomplished
educator, songwriter,
and musician. When
I am not teaching
music, I am the lead singer and songwriter
of Last Daze, a rock band that is signed to
Shooter Jennings’ Los Angeles based record
label, Black Country Rock. My album
“Symbols & Snares” has earned me national
attention from the music industry. I am also
featured on several tracks on Shooter
Jennings’ worldwide release, “Don’t Wait
Up (For George)” and have earned critical
acclaim from several publications including
Billboard Magazine, the All Music Guide,
and Relix Magazine.
I am a passionate music educator. I earned a
Bachelor of Science in Music Education
with a concentration in Vocal/General
Music from the College of Saint Rose and a
Master’s Degree in Music Education from
Boston University, writing a thesis on music
curriculum development. I have served as
the elementary general music teacher at
Middleburgh Central School for 5 years
prior to pursuing my performing career.
During that time, I taught private vocal,
guitar, and piano lessons to many students of
all ages. One of my more notable students
includes NBC’s “The Voice” Season 8
Winner, Sawyer Fredericks. I worked with
Sawyer for over 3 years, mentoring him as a
songwriter. I also had several students who
are currently touring with national choirs
and opera companies.
I love instilling my deep passion for music
with my students and helping to inspire a
lifelong desire to succeed musically. I am
thrilled to be home at JCS and hope to
continue the musical tradition that JCS has
carried for so many years.

Vision Alliance Free Eye Screening In School Lions Clubs of Northern New York district 20W are excited to announce A NEW PARTNERSHIP with the
North Country Association for the Visually Impaired (NCAVI).
Hundreds of dedicated professionals and volunteers are collaborating on the development and promotion of a
FREEE vision screening program for children of all ages.
With the help from the communities they serve, NCAVI and the Lions Clubs are hoping to purchase a state of
the art SPOT VISION SCREENER that will identify potential vision problems instantly. Vision issues that
