The gathering is prompted by ‘different factors.’ERIC ZIMMERezimmer@mrtimes.com
A community rally out-side Maple Ridge’s tem-porary homeless shelter is planned for this Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m.
The idea to hold it was prompted by a number of different factors, said Grover Telford, who runs a business in town, and is spearheading rally organ-ization efforts.
“There’s a lot of people who aren’t too happy about what’s going on,” he said. “It’s starts with the fact the business district wasn’t consulted properly on what their feelings were, and wheth-er they wanted it situated where it is. Even if I was
100 per cent okay with what was going on in there, it’s in the wrong spot.”
The second factor, he said “has to do with whether you agree there should be open drug use in the premises and in
front of the premises. Homelessness is one thing, but there’s open drug use going on there, so that’s another concern.”
In Telford’s mind, “noth-ing has really changed” from when there was a tent city on Cliff Avenue.
“In my mind it’s tax-payer dollars going into something that is more of a cover-up of a problem, which started because the whole tent thing at Cliff wasn’t addressed right away,” he furthered.
“It grew and it got out
of hand because the bylaw wasn’t being enforced.”
Now, Telford said, “we have this shelter, which looks like an army bar-racks, but what’s it really achieving? I know it’s only temporary, I under-stand that, but temporary becomes permanent.”
Telford clarified he’s “not a hard person,” and understands that home-lessness has to be dealt with. “But, as far as the drug issue goes, we’re not dealing with it and can’t seem to deal with it on this local level.”
So why hold the rally?“It’s not about immedi-
ate change,” Telford said. “It’s about setting change in motion.”
For example, “we had the rally against tent city, and tent city is no longer there.”
Telford’s next plan is a delegation to City council.

Beds become available as temperatures drop.ERIC ZIMMERezimmer@mrtimes.com
The B.C. government is funding 15 extreme weather shelter spaces in Maple Ridge this winter, to help people whose health and safety may be threatened by cold, wet weather.
The temporary spaces will be avail-able from now until March 31, at the
Salvation Army’s Caring Place at 22188 Lougheed Hwy., when Maple Ridge issues extreme weather alerts.
It’s the second year The Caring Place has done this, explained the centre’s executive director Darrell Pilgrim.
“Basically, if the temperature goes below zero degrees, or it’s close to zero and the weather is very wet, we open the shelter for people to come in and out of the cold.”
The service is available from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m., on a night-to-night, as-needed, first-come, first-serve basis,
he explained. The service was offered a few times
last year, but the shelter was never at capacity, so no one was ever turned away, and Pilgrim doesn’t anticipate they’ll deal with capacity crowds this year, either.
“In addition to the shelter spaces we already have in Maple Ridge, it is critical to provide emergency shel-ter during those extremely cold and wet winter nights,” Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing said.

Three incidents investigated.
Ridge Meadows RCMP are investi-gating two break-ins and one rob-bery from the new Mark’s store, locat-ed on the Lougheed Highway in Maple Ridge.
“The string of incidents started back on Friday, Oct. 23, when the store was broken into,” said Ridge Meadows RCMP Cpl. Brenda Winpenny.
A second break in occurred the night of Sunday, Nov 1.
“Police are noti-cing similarities that may indicate the same person was involved in both of these,” she said.
Police have released a sur-veillance photo of a suspect. He is described as a Caucasian in his 40s, 5 ft., 8 in. tall with a medium to heavy build. He either has very short blond hair, or is bald.
The store was targeted again this past Friday, during business hours.
At approximately 2:30 p.m., a store employee noticed a male attempting to steal items from the store, said Winpenny.
“When con-fronted, this male produced a knife and managed to run out of the store,” she added. “Through this investigation, a suspect has been established, and his arrest is being act-ively pursued.”

Provincial funding will help with projects.
Three schools in School District 42 will be able to proceed with routine capital projects, thanks to $846,000 in provincial funding.
Albion Elementary and Fairview Elementary will each receive an upgrade to their central boiler plant and domestic hot water system.
Each project will cost $216,000 and will replace two boilers with new high efficiency boiler pumps, valves, direct digital control panel,
and a hot water heater. Work is expected to begin this year and finish by spring 2016.
Westview Secondary School is planning a $414,000 mechanical upgrade project.
In phase one, 46 roof-top heat pumps with gas fired back-up heating will be pur-chased and then installed in phase two.
Phase one of this project is expected finish by spring 2016, with phase two slated for early
summer of 2016.“We continue to invest in
our schools to ensure they operate as efficiently as pos-sible while also extending the life of the buildings,” Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows MLA Doug Bing said.
Critical of MyED School boards around
B.C paid millions for the prob-lem-plagued MyEducation BC sys-tem, now it’s only fair that school boards should see overtime and extra costs returned, the NDP said
in a release.“Since the school year began,
school districts across our prov-ince have struggled with sys-tem-wide malfunctions from this government’s new $100 million MyEducation BC computer sys-tem,” said New Democrat educa-tion spokesperson Rob Fleming.
“The developer apologized and admitted it fell far short of the mark,” he continued.
“Now it’s up to government to impose a penalty that will be returned to the school boards.”

Maple Ridge-Mission MLA Marc Dalton said he is “very concerned about the introduc-tion of euthanasia in Canadian society.”
Dalton made the comments in relation to remarks from B.C.’s health minister Terry Lake, in regards to a committee report.
Lake said he won’t develop policies on the issue of phys-ician-assisted suicide until he sees how Prime Minister Justin Trudeau handles a court imposed dead-line to craft new legis-lation.
“It would be obviously appropriate to see what the feder-
al government is going to do, whether they are going to seek an extension or not,” Lake said.
“Once we have that information, it frames the work we need to do to make sure we’re aligned with the Supreme Court.”
Dalton was the lone commit-tee member to vote against.
The MLA said he opposes the idea of assisted suicide and the committee didn’t do enough to
get input from those against the practice.

TROY LANDREVILLEtlandreville@mrtimes.com
It should have been one of the most exciting times of Jenni Rempel’s young life – at the time, she was
a 21-year-old intern living in New York City.
Then, suddenly, she became violently ill.
This was no 24-hour flu. Rempel was vomiting, had
diarrhea and “all kinds of gross things,” she related.
“I had to go to the ER it was so bad,” Rempel said. “I was at the American hospital, which was pretty scary. I was on my own, there, I didn’t know what to do. I never experienced pain like that before, and I thought it would just go away.”
It didn’t. The pain clung to her like a parasite.
Today, Rempel said is in significant pain about “75 per cent of the time” and
she’s hoping the community will rally around her to help her alleviate what she’s going through, almost every day.
“Shining the Spotlight: A Benefit to Illuminate Invisible Illness” will take place at Theatre in the Country (9975 272th St.) this Sunday, Nov. 15 starting at 2 p.m.
This afternoon of perform-ances will raise awareness and spread information about chronic diseases and illnesses such as endometriosis, and will benefit Rempel, now a 24-year-old Maple Ridge performer and volunteer.
Rempel is fundraising to have laparoscopic excision surgery for
endometriosis in the U.S. next month.
All funds raised will go towards the special surgery at Vital Health Institute in Los Gatos, Calif. Rempel believes this treatment is the most effective for a disease with no known cure.
The surgery’s official price tag is $22,610, Rempel shared.
Endometriosis is a chronic hormone and
immune disease that affects one in 10 women, and can cause debilitating pain and life-alter-ing symptoms.
Rempel com-pares the feeling to being stabbed with needles in her lower abdom-inal area, or like someone raking a razor blade under her skin.
“It’s pretty painful,” she said. “It’s a very difficult thing to live with.”
Initially Rempel was suffering from pain a few days a month and now, she says, “it’s every day.”
Rempel said three doctors have diagnosed her with hav-ing endometriosis, “so that’s what I’m basing it off of.”
But the only way to be 100 per cent sure is to have the surgery and a biopsy, which is why she’s fundraising to go to California in December.
The benefit show will fea-ture local performers including Maple Ridge residents Laura
Cramer, Jimmy Berkenpas, Josh Osborne, Jeffrey Martin, Amy MacDonald, Neva Broadhead, and Franqui Barber.
A wide variety of perform-ances will take place, such as musical duets, dances, and a sneak preview of the upcom-ing Christmas musical at Theatre in the Country: It’s A
Wonderful Life. There will be a
bake sale featur-ing vegan and glu-ten-free options, tea and coffee, as well as a silent auction with items provided by local organizations and artists.
Tickets are $15 at the door, cash or cheque only.
This fundraiser is volunteer run, and all proceeds will go towards the surgery.
Rempel – a part time marketing and web con-
tent coordinator with The ACT – has only lived in Maple Ridge for a short time. But she feels fortunate to have so many people in her corner.
“Since moving to Maple Ridge, there have been so many people who have been so friendly and helpful to me so I’m really grateful for all of their support,” Rempel said.

Housing everyone’s right
There are approximately 25,000 Syrian refugees expected to arrive in Canada between now and January.
They will need a great deal of help, and we expect that between the government, churches, and charitable citizens, that help will be available. By and large, Canadians are
willing to lend a hand, especially in extraordinary circumstances. B.C. could see a relatively high proportion of the new refugees – Toronto and Vancouver and their suburbs are the most favoured destinations for newcomers to Canada.
The goal of rescuing people from overcrowded refugee camps and war zones is laudable. But when there is a crisis, it is easy to mobilize public opinion and the machinery of government to deal with major problems.
Other problems last for years, and become invisible. If we can house 25,000 refugees in less than two months, why can’t
we find proper housing for Canada’s homeless as well?In Metro Vancouver, there are more than 2,700 people without any
kind of housing. That likely misses more people who are sleeping on couches or in their cars.
Homelessness is a kind of permanent crisis. We see it every day, we walk around the people we see on the streets, tossing a few coins or avoiding eye contact. And every few years, the province or cities will make a new drive to try to end homelessness once and for all, but any improvements tend to be temporary.
Homelessness is not an easy problem to solve, and even with a lot of money thrown at it, it can’t be dealt with in a matter of months. But we don’t believe it’s insurmountable. The vast majority of people on the streets can be housed, and they can be helped to better lives.
This is not an argument to deal with homelessness before taking in refugees.
Canada is one of the world’s wealthiest nations. We should be able to help refugees become new Canadians, and help our homeless citizens. Both need compassion and practical help.

I have not yet fully recovered from something silly that happened a week and a half ago. You’d think that an extra hour of sleep wouldn’t be
something that would require a recovery period.
But when statistics for the past week or so are compiled, they will almost certainly show a spike in car acci-dents, in-home injuries, and absences from work.
It’s not just the amount of sleep that is the culprit, it’s the massive change in our circadian rhythm.
People who are normally confused by driving (nearly everyone believes they are significantly better than aver-age drivers, which is proof enough that most of us are confused) go through a per-iod of general confusion as their brains try to settle with a new reality.
The new reality we’ve had to deal with
over the past week is one in which all the cats and dogs in our lives, not to mention pigs and cows and little children, seem to expect to be fed an hour earlier.
That’s because, unlike us, cats and dogs and pigs and cows – and children too
young to understand what the shifting numbers on the microwave mean – aren’t as silly as the rest of us.
Their universe is ruled by their circadian rhythm, a natural 24-hour clock that evolved to help us all to go to sleep at night and start foraging for breakfast in the morning.
The cows, cats, dogs, and tykes haven’t heard of Benjamin Franklin, a guy who, let’s face it, had a heck of a sense of humour... but his joke should have died
with him more than 200 years ago.You see, the idea of daylight saving
time is millennia old.
But it didn’t get a real foothold until Benny joked about getting Frenchmen out of their beds an hour earlier to conserve candle wax.
Unfortunately for us, somebody didn’t realize he was kidding – just poking a little fun at his French friends – et voila! We have bumper cars and people falling off ladders twice every year.
It’s not like this hasn’t been tried before.
There are indications that ancient civil-izations toyed with the idea, maybe even trying it for a while, then usually scrap-ping it before long.
The Romans grabbed that ball and ran with it for several hundred years, making seasonal adjustments to their water clocks to “compensate” for the normal course of the day.
It only proves that someone back then had a Franklinesque sense of humour, and just as there always is, there was someone in a position of authority who didn’t get the joke.
Or maybe they did get the joke. But just
like when they entertained themselves by feeding Christians to the lions, or biting the heads off ostriches, or staging deadly wars and sea battles in the Coliseum, it was a case of someone taking the joke way, way too far.
There has been a lot of speculation about what may have caused the Roman Empire to collapse.
Maybe it was Daylight Saving Time.Maybe the people stopped laughing, but
the powers-that-be kept poking them with that same old groaner year after year, until no one could take it anymore.
It’s time to recognize that, like all good jokes eventually do, this one’s get-ting old.
It’s time to roll off a good belly laugh, admit to Ben Franklin, wherever he may or may not be, that we’ve been had, and by Jimminy, that was a real knee-slap-per... and stop injecting our whole social system with a case of jet lag every few months or so.Read Matthew Claxton’s Painful Truth online

Facebook feedbackPlans are in the works for a community rally Saturday outside the tem-porary homeless shelter in Maple Ridge, and readers are reacting...“More NIMBY at its finest. I suppose Grover would be happy if we just let the homeless hide in bushes scattered around Maple Ridge, as it has been done for decades. Out of sight, out of mind, right…”
– Blake Whitelaw
“Harm reduction works. Where exactly do you expect people to use? When they are homeless and can’t use in the privacy and luxury of their own home or down have friends with homes to use in. shame on you maple ridge for your rally! I sure hope none of you or your loves ever become homeless and drug entrenched.”
– Danielle Taylor
“These people who won’t let it go...really need a hobby.”
– Katie Clunn
“Leave the people in the shelter alone. Nobody is going to be happy where a shelter is it hasn’t been long and let’s see how things play out. you don’t need to hold a rally outside the shelter and bother the people inside. Yes Grover Telford owns a business but his is a carpet cleaning business nowhere in the vicinity of the rain city shelter.”
– Kim Plumridge
“ I have half a mind to protest the protest. Those people need help, not pitchforks.”
– Matt Tingey
“The issue is not so much the shelter but the open drug use that is condoned on the premises and the constant stream of stolen property that is brought back each day. Bike with child carriers full of goods that were empty in the morning. This is truly a low barrier shelter with no rules. How many residents have been placed into long term treatment? A protest at the shelter doesn’t make sense to me. Addressing concerns with council directly is more appropriate.”
– Ronald Rogers
“Hide this from the community to preserve the community this is just a personal issue with rallying it is not going to resolve the stigma of homelessness and drug addiction especially being that it is right next door where ever you live.”
– Terry Williams
“You don’t own a business next to the shelter… You also… are not a vulnerable elderly person living in the condos on Selkirk Avenue. What about their rights under the Charter Of Rights And Freedoms for personal safety.”
– Grover Telford

Dear Editor,I read in The TIMES, that
RMH recorded a record fund-raiser through the “Arabian Nights Gala.
My, all of you involved in this event must have been euphoric.
Too bad the hard working caretaking staff couldn’t be there to share.
They really need some qual-ity attention. A very depressed, stressed out bunch, not good as this transfers to patients already stressed. Patients need to be greeted and cared for in a positive upbeat manner.
By the way, what does the hospital actually net after this gala, and what actually goes into the hospital coffers?
I have been receiving chemo-therapy treatments for the past few months at the very cheery, bright and efficient Abbotsford Cancer Clinic.
A blood clot was discovered Sept. 22 and Abby ER provided a shot and two Warfarin pills the next day.
Six more shots over six days were prescribed along with Warfarin pills to stabilize the situation and it was decided that I could conveniently do this at Ridge Meadows Hospital since I reside in Maple Ridge.
The appropriate treatment procedures were sent from Abbotsford Regional Hospital ER to RMH ER.
At RMH, I spent five hours to get one shot and two pills with all paperwork prepared ahead of time. That’s at least three hours of my time totally wast-ed by the disorganized, poorly scheduled staff who are defin-itely understaffed and severely demoralized. What a disgrace-ful performance and what a disgraceful environment.
I’m a businessman who val-ues time as money and RMH sure wasted a lot of it for me on this day, and I’m sure you all appreciate where I’m com-ing from as I presume you are astute business people your-self. I think it’s lack of proper direction and scheduling for
staff, under-staffing and a dreary, shabby work environ-ment.
Why don’t you go down to the ground floor, all of you on the board, and mingle with patients and staff, in your street clothes, and get your eyes open to the real world of what that hospital needs to be efficient, cheery and upbeat.
Have a look at ARH. They have hardworking, upbeat staff and a great working environ-ment – a very cheery place, a place where staff, patients, and visitors can go to in confidence that they are important and will be looked after in a caring fashion.
I’m a donor to our hospital but I’m reconsidering. I don’t see where my money is being well spent. To my mind, more staff, more positive motivation, better scheduling, and cleaning and brightening the environ-ment would go a long way to respectability and pride.
Arne Odenbach, Maple Ridge
RMH performance was ‘disgraceful’

Bins need some TLCDear Editor,
To recycling pick-up people:
I appreciate the job you do. I’m pro-recyc-ling and do so with every item I possibly can, and you are a direct link to a cleaner planet.
For that I thank you. What I don’t thank
you for is the violence with which you treat my recycling bins.
These are not free bins. I have spent my hard-earned money on them. I would appre-ciate it if you could take a more care in how you return the bins after you have dumped them into your truck. All three of mine are now cracked in such a way that they have lost all structural integrity and will have to be replaced. I know you are in a hurry, but please, slow down just a little and take care with the property of others.
This would include making sure the bins are back on the curb where I left them, NOT in the middle of the roadway.

Doug Clitheroe (right), a long-time Interfor Cedar sales and marketing general manager,
recently retired after 43 years in the forest industry. Clitheroe spent the majority of his career

The traditional Plush model offers classic tailoring but has more “give” or softness at the sleep surface
from additional plush comfort layers at the top of the mattress. A plush mattress is recommended for those who like a softer feel at the sleep surface, but don’t want the additional upholstery layer used in a
pillow top mattress.

MAPLE RIDGE & PITT MEADOWS TIMESA12 Thursday, November 12, 2015 BUSINESS
Maple Ridge Rona store manager Tony Cunningham presented a cheque to Shelly Lycan, special events coordinator for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Epic Homes has donated $33,200 to the City of Maple
Ridge. The dona-
tion is meant to aid in improvements planned by the City to the Albion Sports Complex, spe-cifically for the construction of a pic-nic shelter, said Epic Homes general man-ager Ryan Connolly.
In the past, Epic Homes has made donations to The ACT
Arts Centre, and the Albion bike park.
“On behalf of coun-cil, I would like to
thank Epic Homes for this generous donation,” said Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read.
Epic Homes has been build-ing and selling
homes in town for more than 12 years.
Popcorn cash
The “extremely generous”cus-tomers of the
Rona in Maple Ridge went “above and beyond” with their support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation last month, said Shelley Lycan, special events coordinator for the foundation.
How did they do it? By purchasing popcorn from Rona’s in-store popcorn machine.
Cash from those purchases was then donated to the foun-dation, to the tune of $3,000.
“Thank you to the Maple Ridge custom-
ers and general public of Rona Maple Ridge for your support,” Lycan said.
Drive done
Downtown busi-nesses helped Scarecrows-A-
Plenty be “a tremen-dous success,” accord-ing to the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Association.
Local businesses in the City’s core col-lected approximate-ly 1,350 pounds of non-perishable food and $106.24 in cash donations for the
Friends in Need Food Bank.
In total, 557 custom-ers cast votes for their favourite scarecrows.
Scary success
Kudos to West Coast Auto Group, that
helped three schools deliver sizable food donations to the Friends In Need Food Bank, during a food collection campaign called We Scare Hunger. Catch all the details on our website.

It’s that time of year again, when a few small purchases will put smiles on the faces of children in impoverished coun-tries.
Operation Christmas Child’s (OCC’s) National Collection Week is Nov. 16 to 22 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
On those days, shoeboxes will be collected and packed at Maple Ridge Baptist Church on 222nd Street and Lougheed Highway.
“It’s hard to believe it is time again for Operation Christmas Child shoe-boxes to be packed for needy children overseas,” OCC Ridge Meadows coordinator Barb Gustafson said.
Gustafson said every year, families, businesses, schools and churches in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows give back
through OCC. Locals will be joining tens
of thousands of people across Canada to fill empty shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, hygiene items. The boxes must also include $7/each to cover shipping costs. The boxes are then delivered to impoverished chil-dren around the world.
Due to customs regulations, candy is no longer accepted in the shoeboxes.
Ridge Meadows shoeboxes will be transported to children
in Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Haiti, and Nepaland Ukraine (warm clothes are needed), using what-ever means necessary
– trains, airplanes, boats, ele-phants, bikes and even dog sleds – to get the shoeboxes into the hands of children.
Those who want to pack a shoebox for children in
Ukraine, must have “Ukraine” written on it, and warm clothes in the box.
“Through the power of a simple gift and the message of hope, children learn they are loved and not forgotten,” Gustafson said. “Another Operation
Christmas Child shoebox from Ridge Meadows was sighted in a DVD movie of a boy in Haiti receiving our box.”
Gustafson began volunteering as the Ridge Meadows OCC local coordinator in 2001.
She said her motivation is “knowing that each one of us can make a huge difference in the lives of impoverished chil-dren around the world.”
“This simple gift probably will be the only present many, many children will ever get in their lifetime,” Gustafson said.
She added, “The shoebox really starts with each one of us. If we don’t pack a shoebox, a needy child will miss out.”
Anyone can participate in OCC, Gustafson said. For more information on how to partici-pate in OCC, call Gustafson at 604-467-9794 or visit SamaritansPurse.ca/occ.

Alouette Elementary pilots a new lunch recycling program.
ROC LACHANCEeditorial@mrtimes.com
Pack it in. Pack it out. That’s the mantra at Alouette Elementary.
As part of a new Zero Waste School Initiative undertaken by the local school district and Ridge Meadows Recycling Society (RMRS), the elementary school is endeavouring to teach kids the importance of reducing their carbon footprint, while helping schools reduce waste, conserve water and energy, and save money.
Now, students take all lunch and snack waste home.
Anything and everything that they bring to school as part of their lunch – whether they consume all the food or not – is then taken back home. That includes items such as juice boxes and sandwich bags, said recycling’s Dan Mikolay.
“Zero Waste is off to a fantas-tic start. I am especially excited that school garbage pickup used to be weekly. It has already been reduced to just once a month,” he explained.
“I’ve done numerous waste audits in schools. I found that
90 per cent of waste should have been recycled or com-posted.”
He noted that the recycling society was founded in the early 1970s by teachers, and he describes it as fitting that the society is working closely with schools in this initiative.
Alouette principal Melanie Roth agrees.
“It’s creating awareness and a capacity in the kids to take care of their own waste. Some kids bring a Ziploc bag to pack their waste home,” Roth said.
“Every day we have to think about what we bring because
we will have to bring it back home.”
There is measurably less gar-bage in the school, now, said the principal, who used to col-lect 25 to 30 bags of litter a day on the school grounds. It’s now reduced to just one.
Seven additional components are part of the new initiative and are gradually being intro-duced.
A similiar zero-waste initia-tive is being tested at Fairview Elementary, with a hope that the pilot project will eventually go district-wide.> More: mrtimes.com, search ‘waste’

MAPLE RIDGE • PITT MEADOWS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2015
Situated in a vibrant community, homeowners will find themselves with all of life’s necessities right at their doorstep: amenities, attractions, entertainment, and restaurants. Even more, there is a wide range of indoor and outdoor fitness options, includ-ing Steve Nash Fitness World, the newly renovated North Delta Recre-ation Centre, or the nearby Newton Athletic Park for soccer, baseball, tennis, basketball, and beach vol-leyball. MUSE even offers its own fitness facility so a good workout is
never far from home. For those more inclined to the outdoors, the area encompasses over 1,350 acres of parkland and miles of walking trails and biking routes.
“The immediate area is a close-knit community with a number of nearby schools and amenities,” says Sales Manager, MUSE, Karen O’Hare. “It also features excel-lent shopping, grocery stores and restaurants, easy access to Vancouver and the lower mainland and good transportation.”
However, one of the most exciting draws to the area transcends beyond what is available outside.
“There are affordable options for everyone,” says O’Hare.. Exciting and interesting architecture will pose as a new landmark in the neighbour-hood, offering new home opportuni-ties to people who want to stay in the area or make a move to the area.”
MUSE offers 18 different floor plans to choose from, sleek and mod-ern interiors, and laminate flooring that offers the warmth of wood. Plus, new homebuyers have the option for a limited time to choose one of two professional designed color schemes - Ash or Sand. Enjoy the beauty of the outdoors with stunning city and mountain views with covered balconies with privacy screens give access to the outdoors year round, and embrace space with layouts that offer plenty of room to grow.
“I love the 9ft ceilings and the gor-geous expansive windows,” O’Hare says. “All the homes include parking as well as a deck and/or patio. I love the luxury details in the kitchen including the quartz counters and glass backsplash with the Whirlpool stainless steel appliance package.”
All features – from indoor luxuries to outdoor amenities - contribute to creating a bright, fun, and inviting space that completes the MUSE lifestyle.
“We anticipate MUSE to appeal to
a wide demographic,” says O’Hare, “young people wanting to stay in the neighbourhood they grew up in, professionals wanting to move up and downsizers wanting to stay close to their friends and family.”
With over two decades of home building experience, Bassi Prop-erties is recognized as a reputable homebuilder across the Lower Mainland, O’Hare says.
Bassi Properties is driven by the principles of quality, reliability and affordability to ensure the homes
they build exceed the standards customers deserve.
“There has not been a lot of new home multi family opportunities in the area and MUSE has already attracted huge interest,” she says. “The exciting architecture and finishings as well as the quality construction and design will make MUSE a must-see for any new home buyer.”
Muse is located at 9015 120th Street in Delta. For more informa-tion visit www.liveatmuse.com
Muse as a verb means to re-flect deeply
and consider something thoughtfully. As a noun, it refers to a person who is a great source of artistic inspiration. Now, as a property in Delta, MUSE refers to the beautiful 101 con-dos, four townhouses, and seven commercial opportunities starting at $189,900.

A Korean War soldier recounts his years of service in the early 1950s.TROY LANDREVILLEtlandreville@mrtimes.com
Blood washed from South Korean soil decades ago, but the graph-ic images are cemented in Jim Boyd’s memory.
The 82-year-old Korean War veter-an lives a quiet life now as a retiree in Pitt Meadows, but he’ll never forget what he experienced during what’s com-monly known as “The Forgotten War.”
“Oh yeah, lots of that,” he said, about the carnage he witnessed. “Legs hanging off and that sort of thing.”
Born in Stenhousemuir, Scotland, Boyd spent the early 1950s in the military, starting his two years of national service for his country in ’52.
He began with the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC), training in Hampshire, England, and after six months received a leave.
When he returned, Boyd was posted to a hospital in London.
“I was only there about a couple of months or so, and I got the word that they’re going to Korea, and that’s where I went,” Boyd said. “I was in the army for two years and I was a year-and-a-half in Korea.”
During his time in South Korea, Boyd was with the 26th Field Ambulance, RAMC.
He was headquartered at an advanced dressing station that sent out casualty clearing posts (CCPs) to help the wound-ed.
“If there was a battle on, we were there, to get the guys out and get them to hospitals or wherever they needed to go,” Boyd explained. “We were the interim between the actual battle and the hospi-tals.”
Boyd said he was on the wireless radio, and would bring in helicopters, during the day, to retrieve the wounded.
“At night you had to send them out by ambulance,” Boyd noted.
He continued, “That was what we did: the guys sent the wounded down to us and then we sent them to where we felt they had to go, depending on the ser-iousness of their wounds.”
Boyd and his comrades supported the Duke of Wellington’s regiment in the first Battle of the Hook, the
Black Watch in the second Battle of the Hook, and the Royal Scots in the third Battle of the Hook.
“We would set up a tent and dig into the side of a hill, and make hooches [bar-racks] to live in,” Boyd explained. “The regiments would send the wounded to us, and we would send the wounded to where we felt they had to go, either back to the advanced dressing station, or by helicopter to the Sea of Japan, and when they went to the Sea of Japan, then they
went to Tokyo.”Boyd said if a number of soldiers
arrived “in really bad condition,” those with the 26th Field Ambulance would perform emergency first aid.
A roofer by trade, Boyd said he saw “lots of things” before the war.
“There were things happening and you got used to it,” he replied, when asked if he had to desensitize himself to what he encountered in Korea.
“You didn’t get that close to people. When you’re in the army, in the regi-ment, you got close to guys, but where we were, we were just moving the wounded over, so you didn’t really get too involved with people.”
After the war officially ended on July, 27 1953, Boyd didn’t return to Scotland until December of that
year. He started roofing again, but didn’t
like the spotty nature of the trade so he trained as a psychiatric nurse, an occu-pation he took up until his retirement in 1995.
After he moved to Canada in 1967, the father to a grown son and stepson worked at the former Riverview Hospital for 29 years.
“I was involved in starting up the union that they had [at Riverview],” Boyd said. “I was the president for seven years.”
Yesterday (Nov. 11), Boyd, a member of the Korean Veterans Association (KVA) served as the Sergeant at Arms of the Pitt Meadows ceremony. “I carry the flag,” he said. “I’ve done them [the ceremony] for a few years, now.”
Boyd said he and fellow KVA members “salute to South Korea.”
“I bring the guys to attention and we look towards Korea,” Boyd said. “We sorted it all out as to exactly which dir-ection we should go in, and we do that from the cenotaph.”

Looking for a family physician?
Plans in the works to address mental health and substance abuse in this town.
This spring, I wit-nessed 50 determined and passionate com-munity stakeholders
– including youth, parents, social workers, school district representatives, youth coun-sellors, RCMP constables, teachers, social service managers, front line work-ers, family doctors, repre-sentatives from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians and many others – gather in a room over the course of three meetings to iden-tify ways to increase timely access to mental health and substance use services and programs for children, youth, and their families in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
As many families are
fighting the battle of mental health and substance use each and every day, the professionals helping these kids absolutely refuse to give up and believe in work-ing together to remove the obstacles so children, youth and their families can get the help they need.
With some funding from the Ridge Meadows Division of Family Practice and Shared Care, we are on our way.
The first discovery of this stakeholder group (a.k.a. the Ridge Meadows Local Action Team) is that there is a lack of awareness of all the programs and services children, youth, families, and professionals have available to them.
So, Plan 1: To build an inventory of services and do some big-time sharing and partner development.
Our second discovery, and no surprise to anyone, is the lack of access to profession-als.
So, Plan 2: Inquire about creating a psychiatry youth clinic and design a program that fits our community and
bring the professionals to town so children and youth can get the help they need – and fast.
Our third discovery is the way we communicate with children and youth in crisis. This is a world of technol-ogy, and youth are using their devices to connect. We need to adapt and respond in a way that is mean-ingful and effective.
So, Plan 3: Look at a communication technology plan between profession-als, families, chil-dren, and youth. It’s clear we need to do a much better job at providing ways to connect.
Dr. Ursula Luitingh is Ridge Meadows Division of Family Practice’s board chair and chair of this project, is pas-sionate on the issue.
“It is not acceptable for any kids to fall through the cracks and not receive the help they need when they are ready to receive it. By everyone coming together there is this enormous strength and belief
that we can make some big change happen for children, youth and families,” Luitingh said.
“As a group we are nimble and only want our talk to turn into action. We believe our plans are going to make
a difference with all of our commun-ity strength and power.”
Oh, the first step, the step that trumps all other plans: We need the voice of even more children, youth, and families to lead this work and set the direc-
tion. As our plans our getting
off the ground, if you or you know a youth or young adult who would be interested in having their voice and opin-ion heard – we would love to hear from you.

PEOPLE WHO READ
NEWSPAPERS AND PEOPLE WHO HAVE
MONEY HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON.
Newspaper ads, both print and online, play a key role in helping people make their banking and investment decisions.
Newspapers and their sites outperform all other media in engaging Canadians, including high-income Canadians, boomers, moms and even young adults.
All of which makes advertising in newspapers a very smart move.

Jordan Hollett hopes to make impact in Regina.TROY LANDREVILLEtlandreville@mrtimes.com
Jordan Hollett hopes to make Regina his permanent hockey home.
The 16-year-old recently made a quan-tum hockey leap, getting the call from the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Pats after a pit stop with the junior B Ridge Meadows Flames.
Hollett was the Pats first selec-tion of the 2014 WHL bantam draft, marking the first time since the inception of the draft in 1990 that the Pats selected a goaltender in the first round.
But a logjam in the Pats crease saw
Regina send Hollett to the Flames in late September, rather than the Okanagan Hockey Academy, where he shone last season.
Hollett debuted with the Pats Saturday, in relief against the league-leading Victoria Royals. He stopped 26 of 29 shots in a 6-1 Pats loss.
Before the call-up, Hollett told the TIMES “It’s been really good – a little bit bet-ter than I expected. There’s a great team
in front of me, a great group of guys so that really helps.”
It’s been an interest-ing hockey journey for the former Langley peewee and bantam.
“I started out as a
player – a forward, then a defenceman, and one day I wanted to try it [goaltending] out and I’ve been playing it ever since,” Hollett said.
The reason is sim-
ple: “I think goal-tender is probably the most important pos-ition.”
He relishes the pres-sure, and high expect-ations that have been heaped upon him, especially during the past couple of years.
“I’ve been living with it forever,” he said. “It sort of comes naturally.”
It was in minor hockey when Hollett realized he belonged in the crease.
Fast forward to today, and Hollett’s time with the Flames was all the more enjoyable because of his familiarity with coach Jamie Fiset.
“I knew Jamie because he was the Team BC goalie coach, so I talked to him quite a bit,” he said.
Hollett guarded the cage for Team BC at the 2015 Canada Winter Games (CWG) tournament in Prince George, posting a 2-2 record.
“The kid has excelled at every level and we’re fortunate
to be a small part of his promising career,” said Fiset, who was Team BC’s goaltender coach at the CWG.
That said, Hollett realizes he still has some work to do to get to the next level.
“Everything,” he answered, when asked what part of his game needs fine-tun-ing.
“Everything needs to get better to not only play at next level but to be one of the best.”
Helping him develop into the goaltender he wants to be is Angelo Maggio of Langley’s Magic Hockey Training Centre, who, Hollett said, has
“helped me a ton.”“I’ve been coming
here all the time… summer camps, private sessions… obviously I wouldn’t be here without him,” Hollett said.
Maggio said he’s proud of his young protege, adding he “believes he’s ready for the next level.”

Ridge cyclistmakes worldsMaggie Coles-Lyster is off to Belgium in January.
Maple Ridge cyclist Maggie Coles-Lyster’s bike racing season hit a high point, as she raced to a bronze medal at the Canadian National Cyclocross Championships, on Oct. 24 in Winnipeg, Man.
The 16-year-old athlete’s third-place finish earned her a spot on the Canadian U23
Cyclocross Team to compete at the World Cyclocross Championships this January, in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium.
It will be her first opportunity to compete at a world championship.
She’s also a track and road racer. From Oct. 9 to 11, Coles-Lyster compet-ed at the Canadian National Track Championships in Milton, Ont., win-ning five medals,
including three national championships. In addition, she earned a silver medal at the
junior national Criterium championships this past June in Thetford Mines, Que.
“Maggie loves to race her bikes, and loves to do the many different disciplines our sport offers,” said her coach and father Barry Lyster.

A group of young hockey players raise $800 for local veterans.
ERIC ZIMMERezimmer@mrtimes.com
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 88 in Maple Ridge will be receiving an $800 donation, thanks to
the fundraising efforts of a local minor hock-ey team.
On Sunday, the Ridge Meadows Peewee A3 team held a “shake-a-skate” fundraiser, at the
Save-On-Foods on 227th Street, as well as at the Canadian Tire store.
Team members wore their dress clothes and team jersey, as they held out a skate for people to deposit donations into.
They also opted to to put $25 from their “quarter jar fund” into the pot, explained Clay Gagnon, A3 man-ager.
The quarter jar fund comes from parents who put a quarter into the jar each time the team scores a goal during regular season games.
The funds from the jar typically then go towards a pizza party at the end of the year.
“So the boys not only donated their time, but also a por-tion of their pizza fund to veterans,” Gagnon said.
“I thought that was really cool,” the man-ager said.
“The team felt real-ly good about their [fundraising] achieve-ment and are learning a valuable lesson, not only in giving back, but exercising their freedom to do so – the same freedom that our vets fought so hard to protect,” he added.
