I. Manors—Lord’s Estate—Economic system of the Middle Ages—most people loved out to the countryside after the fall of the Roman Empire because of no trade.

1. Size – a few square miles/included lord’s house, church, workshops, village for serfs to live

A. They were SELF-SUFFICIENT – Able

to get along without help; independent

B. The serfs/peasants raised/produced nearly everything needed for daily life

C. Exceptions = salt, iron, millstones

II. A serf’s life – was very difficult1. Taxes – paid high taxes to lord and church called tithes

A. Tithes – tax - 10% of your annual income to the church

1. Marriage – could not marry without lord’s permission

2. Clothing – it was a crime to wear clothes outside of your social class

3. Housing – 2-3 rooms in which animals lived for warmth and protection

a. Dirt floor in centerb. Families slept on piles of straw which crawled with insects

5. Hygiene – Did not bathe/change clothes – (lice/fleas)
