Senior MoMentSManistee County Council on Aging
Issue: May 2017
By Sarah HowardExecutive Director
May is here and the thing that always comes to my mind is my Mom. There are a lot of special dates in May. Mothers Day is one of my favorites. One of the most influential, loving and wonderful people in my life was always my mom and still is. I know my sister, brother and I would not be the people we are without her. Our mom worked full time as a teacher, a wife, and took care of three, not always perfect, children. Back then most of my friends’ moms didn’t work and I envied them. They always had big meals, when we might end up at Dairy Depot or the Harvest Table after school. They always had homemade cookies and ours were usually store bought. Their rooms were cleaned and all the laundry was done when they got home, we had to clean our own rooms and laundry got done in the middle of the night, by our mom. Our mom worked her tail off to keep a roof over our heads and clothes on our backs, and she put up with an awful lot to do this. She put up with bosses (priests, superinten-dents and principals), a husband, her children, co-workers and a lot of other people’s children and those children’s parents. Growing up I always en-vied my friends and now that we are grown, my friends tell me they always envied me because I had a pretty cool mom. I agree I think I do have a pretty cool mom. She is always there if any of us need anything. She helps her kids, her grandkids and now her great grandkids with things like sewing, homework, cooking, fixing things (she can fix anything), babysitting and just being there for all of us.
If you have or have had a great mom, tell her how great she is or how great she was. Cel-ebrate her all month, do something in her honor that she would be proud of. I want to say thank you to my Mom, Denise Dursum, for everything you have done for me and our entire family. You are the BEST MOM EVER and I love you more than you will ever know. April ended with a bang. We had a great month with lots of activities and programs. I want to thank everyone for helping us keep things moving in the right direction. It takes a village to run this place and Manistee County is the greatest place on earth. I am very proud to be a part of this organization and a part of many people’s lives. We had to go to press before our Spring Fling so I will share with you next month how it turned out. Something big I want to share with you is from May 14 through June 18 we will be the recipients of the Meijer Simply Give program. Meijer is very generous to Manistee County and especially generous to the seniors of Manistee County. The Simply Give program helps us purchase food for our food bank. If you go to Meijer between May 14 and June 18th you can donate to the Senior Center by purchasing a Simply Give Card at Meijer for $10 or more. Meijer also matches amounts given and during
certain dates will double match them. Our food bank is growing. We have been serving about 130 seniors per month, and with the
way prices have been raising, we expect to see more people every month.
We all want to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day! Remember to try something new!

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid
the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep,
though poppies growIn Flanders fields.

MEMORIAL DAY HISTORYOn May 30, 1868, President Ulysses S. Grant presided over the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery -- which, until 1864, was Confed-erate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s plantation.
Some 5,000 people attended on a spring day which, The New York Times reported, was “somewhat too warm for comfort.” The principal speaker was James A. Garfield, a Civil War general, Republican congress-man from Ohio and future president.
“I am oppressed with a sense of the impropriety of uttering words on this occasion,” Garfield began, and then continued to utter them. “If silence is ever gold-en, it must be beside the graves of fifteen-thousand men, whose lives were more significant than speech, and whose death was a poem the music of which can never be sung.” It went on like that for pages and pages.
As the songs, speeches and sermons ended, the par-ticipants helped to decorate the graves of the Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery.
WISDOM FROM MOMWhether they are praising us or scolding us, moms always have a quotable one-liner waiting to let us know exactly what they think. While it’s always a good idea to take Mom seriously while she’s saying it, we can’t help but look back and laugh sometimes.
a Top 10 All-Time Motherisms a“If everyone else jumped off a cliff, would you do it too?”“It’s all fun and games until someone pokes an eye out.”
“You’d forget your head if it wasn’t screwed on.”“Elbows off the table.”
“Don’t talk with your mouth full.”“Clean up your room, it looks like a tornado hit.”
“Do you think I was born yesterday?”“Is that too much to ask?”
“Why? Because I said so, that’s why!”“Money doesn’t grow on trees!”
a Mom on Health & Hygiene a“Don’t put that in your mouth.”
“Have you brushed your teeth yet today?”“Did you put on clean underwear? ”
“Wash behind your ears—I can see carrots growing.”“Stand up straight, you’re hunching over.”
“Don’t forget your jacket.”“Don’t don’t run with scissors.”
