right now. Hes catching snapper to 6 pounds offshore,
gag grouper to 16 pounds, red grouper to 12 pounds,
plus amberjack farther from shore.
Capt. Mark Johnston, also out of Annies, said red-
fish action is fair to excellent right now. Hes also catch-
ing keeper trout and snook in the backwater, while his
offshore trips are producing snapper and mackerel.
Bill Lowman at Island Discount Tackle at Catch-
ers Marina in Holmes Beach said mackerelfishing in theGulf is good, and snapper seem to be everywhere. Look
for some underwater structures for the best catches. The
snapper are coming in a variety of species: mangrove,
lane and true American red. Backwater action is good for
redfish and more mangrove snapper. The snook bite is
excellent for this time of year, he added.
Bob Kilb at the Rod & Reel Pier said fishing has
been excellent of late. Big redfish are being caught
off the dock, as well as black drum, mackerel, lots
of mangrove snapper and keeper-size snook at night.
Whitebait is thick near the pier, too, Bob added.
Dave Sork at the Anna Maria City Pier said
anglers there have been catching mackerel, black
drum, redfish and big snook. Mangrove snapper are
everywhere as well, plus a few sharks.
Dave Johnson at Snead Island Crab House said
snapper are thick around the dock at the House, and
there are also lots of good reports of snapper coming
from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge piers, some up to

5 pounds. Mackerel are scattered through the bays,
he said, and redfish are just inside the mouth of the
Manatee River.
Capt. Rick Gross on Fishy Business out of
Catchers Marina in Holmes Beach said hes putting
his charters onto keeper-size snook and limit catches
of redfish. For reds, the tides are playing a big role,
with the best action coming on low incoming or low
outgoing water.
On my boat Magic, weve been catching grouper in
the bays yes, grouper in the bay plus lots of redfish,
snapper near the Intracoastal Waterway and snook.
Good luck and good fishing.

A rash of boat thefts in the Tampa Bayarea have law enforcement officials scout-ing area waters and issuing warnings to localboaters.
Warnings in recent months have comefrom the U.S. Coast Guard, area police agen-cies including the Manatee County SheriffsOffice, boating organizations, insurance firmsand state law enforcement and fish and wild-life agencies.
In mid-summer, law enforcement officialsreported the theft offive boats from docks inPinellas County. In each case, the boats could
hit high speeds and hold lots of fuel, with thevessel values ranging from $200,000 to $1million.
Private investigator Charlie Meacham, hired by insurance companies to look intoboat thefts, told the Tampa Tribune in Augustthat he believes the boats will be used forsmuggling people from Cuba to the UnitedStates or to Mexico.
Meacham recently went to Cancun, wherehe reportedly found 44 boats stolen fromFlorida.
Island law enforcement officials have notreported boat thefts, but police reports thissummer documented equipment thefts fromboats.
Last month, a Holmes Beach resident toldpolice that someone stole a $3,500 outboardmotor from a boat at his home on the bay.
Government
officials say boaters
can protect their
investments by using
marinas and boat
storage facilities suchas those found at the
Bradenton Beach
Marina.
Boat thieves cruise into Tampa Bay areaIn late May, four residents reported the
theft of equipment from their boats on theIsland.
In an effort to deter boat thieves and to aid
in the recovery of stolen vessels, the NationalInsurance Crime Bureau recommends:
Before purchasing, check to makesure the hull identification number on aboat matches the HIN on the registrationor title.
Do not leave keys in the boat andalways shut the engine off when disem-barking.
Dock the craft in well-lit areas.
Secure the boat to the dock with alocked steel cable.
Remove expensive equipment from
the boat when not in use. Disable the boat when not in use by
shutting off fuel lines and removing thebattery or the distributor cap.
Use a trailer hitch lock after parkinga boat on its trailer.
Install an alarm system and a kill-switch in the ignition system.
Mark the boat and equipment with thevessels HIN.
Engrave a drivers license numberin a hidden location on the boat, as wellas the engine, ship-to-shore radio, depthsounder, compass, stereo, trailer and other
expensive items. Take photos of the boat, its HIN and
equipment.

Welcome to the
*NEW
Shopping Guide On Sept. 11, the 54-year-old Manatee Shopping Guide announced on its back cover that itwas the last issue. Staff was let go, even delivery people were told, sorry, no more job. We stepped
in to change that. We hired some shopping guide folks, consulted with others, and we are ready to
start anew for you. And we are local. Theres no big group and no out-of-town stock-owner com-
pany, just folks who live and work in Manatee County like you do. We do NOT outsource any jobsand we have been publishing news in Manatee County for more than 16 years. We started humble
in 1992, just as with this venture, but we plan to go gangbusters into season, giving our advertis-
ers the best possible product by providing high circulation, great home delivery, and keeping costs
low. For readers, we hope to provide bargains and information in abundance. You know us as The
Islander, THE newspaper on Anna Maria Island, carrying on a reporting tradition that began in the
1950s. Were the little engine that could. We hope youll jump aboard with us and continue the
tradition of the shopping guide in Manatee County. We promise to make it worthwhile to you and
to our local economy.
