Science of industrial management

Mary Parker Follett (1868-1933)

Theories were focused on Human Relations Approach.

Groups work more effectively when power is shared.

Employees must be empowered to increase productivity.

Interrelatedness- ‘coactive’ instead of coercive.

Emphasis on ‘power-with’ rather than ‘power-over’ people approach.

Leader guides and in turn guided by the group.

Leader influences by motivating others.

Key points in Follett’s theory:

“The best leader knows how to make his followers actually feel power themselves, not merely acknowledge his power”.

Mary Parker Follett

Elton Mayo (1880-1949) Father of Human Relations

Management.

Contributed to Development of Management Thought by carrying out various experiments.

The most famous of them being ‘Hawthrone Experiments’.

Howthrone ExperimentsHawthrone was a plant of Western Electrics situated in

Chicago and had 29,000 employees.

The experiments were done in three stages.

Stage 1

Variations in lighting

Result

Conclusion

Stage 2

Rest pauses and incentives

Result

Conclusion

output was restricted - the group had a standard for output which was respected by individuals in the group;

the group was indifferent to the employer's financial incentive scheme;

the group developed a code of behavior of its own based on solidarity in opposition to the management, and

output was determined by informal social groups rather than by management.

Stage 3Same experiment was done on Bank Wiring Room with a similar application of incentives to productivity:
