Making Comparisons

In English, we use several phrases to make comparisons, like “more than,” “less than,” “as much as.”

Making Comparisons

There are also several phrases used to make comparisons in Spanish.

Making Comparisons

The following phrases can be used with adjectives to make comparisons

más . . . que more. . . than

menos . . . que less. . .than

tan . . . como as . . . as

El surfing es más interesante que el béisbol.Surfing is more interesting

than baseball.

El baloncesto es menos divertido que el fútbol.

Basketball is less enjoyable than soccer.

El tenis es tan aburrido como levantar pesas.

Tennis is as boring as lifting weights.

Please note that the adjective used must agree in gender and number with the noun that precedes it.

Mayor (older) and menor (younger) can be used in two different ways.

1. As adjectives, mayor and menor follow the nouns they describe.

Mi hermano mayor My older brother

Mi hermana menor My younger sister

2. To make comparisons, mayor/ menor are followed by que.Soy mayor que mis primos.

I am older than my cousins.

Pablo es menor que Ana.Paul is younger than Ana.

Mejor (better) and peor (worse) are followed by que.Juego al beisbol mejor que él.I play baseball better than him.

Sara juega al tenis peor que él.Sara plays tennis worse than him.
