What is Machine to Machine? (M2M)What is Machine to Machine? (M2M)
What is Machine-to-Machine (M2M) ?M2M solutions focus on the remote collection of data from embedded sensors or chips placed on objects (Objects can be Production machinery, Final Products, Boxes, Pallets, Containers used to ship those products, Truck to deliver them…) This data is transferred across wired or wireless lines to a remote destination where it can be integrated with other information to provide business value: like to improve a particular process within an enterprise, to allow to offer new services, such as

Some customers like Telcos, Energy & utilities or new entrants are looking at providing to the market(s) they address some M2M solutions sold as Services, they become M2M Services Providers

Machine to Machine Service Challenges
Remote Device Domain
- Device availability- Diversity of device
types- Many device
management standards
NetworkDomain
- Mission-critical availability levels
- Signalling & Bearer capacity to support remote devices
- Evolving network technology
- Changing application communication requirements
- Many M2M services have very low data-rates/ARPU
Service Application Domain
- Scalable remote device management
- IT infrastructure availability
- Security and data Protection.
M2M Service Management Domain- Service Quality Monitoring and Problem Detection across all domains.
- Monitoring and reporting of device level quality data from remote device domain- Management of SLAs e.g. between Mobile Operator and M2M Service Provider
- IT infrastructure monitoring.- IT and Device Asset management

Machine to Machine Service ManagementDifferent M2M services require
different grades of management:
• Mission critical services real-time notification of individual connection problems.
• Near real-time services (e.g. river –level gauge monitoring) Monitor connection-establishment on demand
• Batch services (e.g. periodic upload of vending machine stock) can be postponed until the network is less busy, near real-time monitoring
Scaling for monitoring very large number of individual connections.

Machine to Machine Service Requirements• Collect data from a massive quantity of mobile wireless-enabled sensors
or sensor networks via the mobile network.• Ability to issue commands to sensor and actuator networks via the
mobile network.• Ability to distribute data to remote devices via the mobile network (e.g.
electronic information displays.)• Support different levels of management capability for different types of
machine-to-machine networks.– Firmware distribution– Event monitoring
• Security, privacy and data protection. • Connect many different types of M2M service data centers to the mobile
network.• Monitor and manage service quality delivered to each M2M solution.

Service providers are looking at becoming M2M Service Provider to avoid to be “commoditized” by just being a pipe provider.

Enterprise Customer
• Machine-to-Machine allows communication between machines, sensors & actuators and applications.
• The machines, sensors or actuators can be directly connected to the networks or use devices or gateways to be reached
• Applications can be hosted by a service provider (Case 1)
• or can be within the enterprises (Case 2)
• Or can be provided by a partners

Case 3
Challenges• Scaling network capacity required to support the number of remote devices that must be connected to
network.• Maintaining communications capability between remote devices and the service data centers.• Scaling device management capacity for number of remote devices that need to be managed e.g. firmware
upgrades, provisioning.• Real-time notification of infrastructure problems for mission critical applications such as home health
monitoring.• Many M2M services have very low data rates, paying for reliable connectivity
– Very low ARPU (necessary and feasible)– Need to monitor and enforce data rate caps.
• Different M2M services require different grades of service:– Mission critical services may need constant monitoring of connection to each device, and real-time
notification of connection problems.– Some services (e.g. flow-rate monitoring from a gauge on a gas pipeline) require connection
establishment on demand.– Some services (e.g. routine daily upload of stock in a vending machine) can be postponed until the
network is less busy.• Lack of common standards across industries.• Security
