Objectives of this presentation
• Raise awareness about the benefit of vegetable pulses including sustainable agriculture, food security, income and nutrition
• Promote the value and utilization throughout the food system
• Foster enhanced research
• Advocate for better utilization of vegetables pulses in crop rotation
Importance of Vegetable Pulses
* Good sources of protein
* Good sources of foliate * low in saturated fats and sodium * good amount of vitamin B complex and C * Contains minerals such as calcium, potassium and Iron * Very low glycemic index means absorbed slowly into blood streams
Potassium deficiency
Vegetable pulses
• They are packed with nutrients and have high protein and fibre
• Their nitrogen fixing properties improve soil fertility
• They have broad genetic diversity from which climate resilient varieties can be selected
• They are highly water efficient and their production has low greenhouse emission
• Play a significant role in rainfed agriculture
Food security and vegetable pulses
The crucial gap stays: Micronutrients deficiency – the ‘hidden hunger’
= HUNGER Deficiency in
calories + protein
≥ 0.83 billion underweight
10m in Bangladesh
= MICRONUTRIENT
DEFICIENCY Deficiency in
vitamins & minerals
2 – 3.5 billion
= OVERCONSUMPTION Excess of
calories
≥ 1.1 billion overweight
20 m in Bangladesh
malnourished
40m in Bangladesh
