The first story Aleda Reilly wrote wasn’tdesigned to launch a writing career, sell a lotof copies or even get published.
All she wanted to do was comfort hergrandchildren.
“(It was) just to help them through a re-ally emotional, tough time,” said Reilly, wholives in Land O’ Lakes.
Following the death of her mother,Gladys Soldato, Reilly’s grandchildren wereconfused and upset at the loss of theirbeloved Bama. They were close to theirgreat-grandmother, and adult explanationsweren’t doing the job for Isabella and Katie, ages 4 and 2. As their grandmother, Reillywanted to console them and describe com-plicated feelings in a way they’d understand. So she sat down and wrote them a story.
“Angel Balloons” describes the two girlsspending time with Bama until she passesaway right after Christmas. They’re told shedidn’t get to say goodbye because she wastired, and now lives with the angels inHeaven. The girls send Bama drawings andstickers tied to balloons so she can receivethem and share them with the angels.
When Reilly showed the story to thegirls, it wasn’t illustrated or published. It wasjust a story written by their Avia, a term forgrandmother. But they got the message.
“I read it to (Olivia) and in an exasperat-ed attitude she said, ‘Well you know, Avia, ifanyone had told me this, I wouldn’t havebeen so upset at the time,’” Reilly recalled.
She decided that other children mightbenefit from “Angel Balloons,” and she self-published it. Tate Publishing, a family-owned
Christian-based publisher later picked it up,turning it into a fully illustrated publication,a 3-D book with glasses, coloring book andaudio download.
Reilly appreciates any format that con-veys the story to more children.
Parents can be reserved when it comesto serious subjects with children, she said,
and aren’t always sure how to address newfeelings. She wrote this story to tackle a seri-ous topic in a positive way that youngreaders can understand. She’s pleased it cannow reach more children than her initial au-dience of her two grandchildren.
MICHAEL MURILLO/STAFF PHOTOAleda Reilly combs through copies of of her children’s story, ‘Angel Balloons,’ which hasbeen published in a variety of formats. She wrote it to help her grandchildren cope with theloss of their great-grandmother.

Every year, as marauders take overBayshore Boulevard in Tampa’s GasparillaParade, there’s another invasion ofsorts— as thousands stream into down-town Dade City for the city’s annualKumquat Festival.
“It’s a wonderful alternative (toGasparilla),” said John Moors, executive di-rector of The Greater Dade City Chamber ofCommerce.
The Dade City event — which draws itsname from a diminutive, tangy orange fruit— gives visitors a chance to experience ataste of old Florida in a family friendly at-mosphere, Moors said.
With its free parking, free admission, freeentertainment and assorted free activities, people can enjoy the day without having to
spend a fortune, Moors said.Of course, Moors said, the chamber
would like to see festival-goers do a bit ofspending on items sold by vendors, at arearestaurants and in merchant’s stores.
The event, now in its 18th year, is expect-ed to attract 30,000 to 40,000.
Event-goers come from as far north asThe Villages, as far south as Sarasota, asfar west as the beaches, and as far eastas Orlando.
For some, it’s an annual tradition. Forothers, a reunion. And for still others, it’s
an introduction to the East Pasco city withthe historic courthouse and quaint shops.
The annual festival started simply. It began when Phyllis Smith, Roxanne
Barthle and Carlene Ellberg were lookingfor a way to help inject new life into down-town Dade City.
They decided to have a festival to honor
This tiny orange fruit has helped calledattention to Dade City, a town that boasts acharming downtown and an annual festivalwith an old Florida feel.

Most of the time when you hear whatLawrence Yun, chief economist for theNational Association of Realtors has to say— it’s during a congressional hearing or onthe national news.
But last week, Yun made an appearancebefore real estate professionals gathered fora meeting of the Greater Tampa Associationof Realtors.
He offered plenty of food for thoughtabout the housing market’s condition.
“The bottom line is that we have en-countered some degree of recovery. I thinkwe will continue the recovery over the nexttwo to three years, and then subsequently, the recovery may well change into expan-sion,” said Yun, who frequently speaks atconferences for real estate professionalsaround the country.
“Now, you are just trying to get back tothe prior principal in terms of prices. It maytake an additional two to three years to getto where it had been in 2005-2006,” Yun said.
When it comes to home prices, he said,Florida has a key advantage: Its warm winterweather.
Through the years, people have movedto Florida from colder climates in northernstates.
“It sort of came to a halt during the hous-ing market crash. People up North justcould not sell their home, or they weresomewhat underwater,” Yun said.
The market recovery has put them in abetter position to move, which is goodnews for Florida, he said.
“So, you will regain that flow of new resi-dents coming into Florida. Florida has beenNo 1, consistently, during normal years in at-
tracting new residents,” Yun said. The housing market had generally expe-
rienced a two-year recovery in 2012 and2013, but then stalled in 2014, Yun said. Sopeople are wondering what will happennext.
“A two-year-and-out situation would behighly unusual, if one looks at the past,” Yunsaid. He considers it an anomaly and pre-dicts that there will be a continued recovery
that may well lead to growth and higherprices in the market.
“One of the key reasons is pent-up de-mand, Yun said.
“We have 37 million additional peopleliving in the country and yet we are essen-tially getting the same home sales,” he said.
“We have lower mortgage rates today,”
B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTOLawrence Yun is the chief economist for the National Association of Realtors. He’s predictinga continued recovery for two to three years, and then possibly an expansion.
“There’s more people workingin the Tampa region, so there’smore potential homebuyers.” –Lawrence Yun

Brandon Butts got a break when he was12 years old — working as an apprentice ina computer repair shop.
Months later, a promised job never mate-rialized. But his experience at the repairshop set him on a path toward becoming asuccessful businessman with his own repairshop, Anything Computers, 38501 Fifth Ave.,in Zephyrhills.
Now, 16 years after his youthful appren-ticeship, the 28-year-old Butts wants to payit forward.
He wants to give other computer geeksan opportunity to learn skills to either landa job at his shop or to work somewhere elsein the IT or technology industries.
At the very least, they’ll have a chance towalk away with a wealth of computerknowledge.
When Butts was an apprentice, he dideverything from mopping floors to fixingcomputers. He didn’t get the job he hadhoped for, but he said the experience wasimportant.
"It kind of mapped what I am today.Without the apprenticeship, I wouldn't bewhat I am today,” Butts said.
He wants to open a similar door of op-portunity for today’s youth.
He’s reaching out to local high schoolstudents who want to become interns.
Butts and his employees will train the in-terns, who will provide free diagnosis andrepairs on computers.
To build up an inventory of computersto use in the program, Butts invites peoplefrom the community to bring in computersthat need a repair.
The labor to repair the computer is free, but patrons must pay for any necessary soft-ware or parts, Butts said.
Butts plans to take on about three in-terns at a time for 90 to 120 days of training.
He’s looking for interns who are at least13 years old, but will consider younger ap-plicants.
"I've known 10-year-olds who can buildtheir own computer and are matureenough," Butts said.
The first graduate of his training program
— 18-year-old Pierce McMenamin — landeda part-time job at Anything Computers afterlearning the basics of computer repairs dur-ing a summer internship.
"I never knew how to do any of thisstuff. Now it feels awesome because I haveknowledge,” said McMenamin, a senior atPasco High School.
Learning how to remove a computervirus or how to respond when a computercrashes weren’t part of the learning curve athigh school, McMenamin said.
The 18-year-old said he wound up in theinternship program partly because he waslooking for a summer job and party becausehis dad and Butts are friends.
A little more than a week ago, a new in-tern arrived.
Zephyrhills resident Jesse McGee, 24, anengineering student at St. PetersburgCollege, said he’s a “little techie at heart.”
No matter what job he holds in the fu-ture, McGee said he knows that computerand technology skills are essential.
"This is how it's going to be from hereon out. I might as well learn."
Schedules for interns can be flexible, asthe students must juggle schoolwork andthe apprenticeship.
Butt said almost 80 percent of computertroubles the shop encounters are related toviruses. Sometimes a computer needs atune-up. Other times a system must be re-built from scratch.
"We've seen almost every problem underthe sun," Butts says. "I want to build up theinterns and keep them here. But no matterwhat the job market, they'll have a skill."
As a youngster, Butts was interested incomputers but wasn't certain of a career. His apprenticeship led to a job at anothercomputer repair shop and eventually work-ing with computers became a full-time gig.
Butts opened his first shop in 2009 onMain Street in the midst of the country'sdownward economic spiral. The shop sur-vived, and three years later he relocated toFifth Avenue.
"I wanted to be on Fifth Avenue, the mainpart of downtown," Butts said. “It's classic."
While looking to give young people new
opportunities, Butts also is looking towardexpanding his shop in Zephyrhills into afranchise, and to market socially responsiblemobile applications to a national audience.
One of his patented devices, known asQuiet Zone, is a mobile application market-ed to establishments such as movie theaters, churches and schools that have a need to si-lence cellphones.
His other patented device, DriveTAB, canbe installed in vehicles to prevent textingwhile driving.
Butts said he’s proud of his accomplish-ments, but he noted, "A lot of peopleweren't as lucky as I was.”
He hopes his future graduates will findtheir own path to success with the skillsthey learn at Anything Computers.
For more information about this intern-ship program, contact Anything Computersat (813) 364-1737, or visit their website atMainStreetComputerShop.com.
Internships aim to offer new possibilities

Imani Asukile walks among the head-stones at Indian Pond Cemetery in DadeCity, looking at the writing on each one. Heknows some names, knew some of the peo-ple personally and even has a relative buriedthere. But not every grave is clearly markedand some of the names are unknown.
What is known about the old graves isthat those who were buried there long ago— some at the beginningof the 20th century —faced segregation and dis-crimination.
“This was the premierecemetery for blacks in thisarea. They only allowedblacks to be buried at theDade City Cemetery in theearly 1970s,” Asukile said. Now, as president of theAfrican American HeritageSociety of East PascoCounty, he wants to makesure the area isn’t forgot-ten, along with otherimportant places, eventsand people in local history.
His group hosts military appreciationservices at Indian Pond Cemetery each yearto honor African American veterans. At a re-cent event, around 60 people gathered tohonor World War II veterans. Their familiesreceived special congressional coins andcertificates from the Wounded WarriorProject.
For the heritage society, those events cre-ate recognition for the veterans, and thoseburied at the cemetery where the eventsare held.
“You get inspiration from their storieswhen you understand their struggles, theirvictories, the hills they had to climb,” Asukilesaid. “We have to keep them alive.”
His group keeps those and other storiesalive by hosting different events throughoutthe year. They have youth forums to informyoung people and provide a platform forthem to express their thoughts. And theyhave events to celebrate Kwanzaa, a week-long celebration of African-American cultureheld at the end of each calendar year.
Asukile said it’s the principles ofKwanzaa, including its focus on communitysupport, interaction and problem solving, that guide the African American HeritageSociety of East Pasco County throughout theentire year.
“In everything that we do, Kwanzaa isthe foundation of our existence, so to
speak,” he said. “That’s where everythingsprings from.”
If community seems to be a big focus forthe group, it’s by design. Asukile and the restof the society take the “East Pasco” part ofthe organization’s name seriously. Localevents attended by local residents are whatkeep the group motivated.
“In everything we do, we try to focus onlocal issues and individuals. Most black his-tory programs are national or international, and we don’t have a problem with that,” he
said. But we try to say ‘Howcan we take the same applica-tion and apply it here locally?’”The group recognizes localcommunity members duringBlack History Month inFebruary of each year. The2015 focus will be on thefounders of local communitychoirs, Asukile said.
But that doesn’t mean theyrestrict all their work to onesmall area. Asukile still consid-ers Brooksville home, so he’lloften include that community. They also work with organiza-tions or host events in other
parts of the Tampa Bay area. With a small core of dedicated members
(the heritage society has around 10 activemembers) they provide a year’s worth ofevents to keep the community’s memoriesalive and honor those who came beforethem. He also sees areas for growth, andother communities that could form theirown similar groups. Asukile mentionedWesley Chapel as an area that has a lot of po-tential to form an organization in the future.
Wherever another group pops up in thefuture, Asukile and his group will be there towelcome them. As director of multiculturalstudent affairs and equity services at Pasco-Hernando State College, he knows theimportance of having a presence in the com-munity and being a resource for those seekinginformation. And with the African AmericanHeritage Society of East Pasco County, he canput that into practice off campus, remindingresidents of historic places, people and eventsso their stories won’t be forgotten.
“Every community has to have some-thing or somebody who is a griot, astoryteller, a keeper of the history of thecommunity, of the people. Every communityhas to do to it. otherwise you start losing thestories,” Asukile said.
For more information about the AfricanAmerican Heritage Society of East PascoCounty, send an e-mail to Asukile at eliksuaflmbc@hotmail.com.

Regardless of your religious beliefs, youmay be looking for ways to find moremeaning in your life.
Here are three ways to possibly find thatenlightenment:
• Spend more time with your family andclose friends. Turn off the TV. Ignore yourlatest text message. Linger in the companyof each other — whether that’s over a deli-cious meal or on a long walk. Giving yourloved ones your undivided attention canbring you closer together.
• Volunteer your time and talents to helpothers. You may have a packed schedule, but with a little effort, you may be able to
find time to set aside for some volunteerwork to help you connect with others inyour community.
• Give yourself time to be introspective. There is plenty of great literature availableto help you reflect and explore your ownspirituality. One new title, “Coming Home, ASpiritual and Religious Dialogue,” by StarChang, who has studied religious scrip-tures, history and spiritual books for years, delves into the teachings of the likes ofBuddha, Jesus, Plato and Muhammad. Thebook seeks to help readers navigate theirown path by discovering which teachingsapply to them and how to incorporatethem into a modern lifestyle. This readingcan be especially beneficial to those look-ing for more meaning around the holidayseason.

First impressions matter, especially whenyou’re trying to land a new job.
A top-notch resume and cover letter canhelp get your foot in the door, but only youcan seal the deal.
Follow these tips to help ensure thatyou make a positive first impression thatwill help turn that job interview into a joboffer.
• Be a good listener. Being engagedwhen others are talking is just as important— or perhaps even more important — thanwhat you say. Maintain good eye contactand ask relevant questions to demonstratethat you’re interested in what’s being said.
• Anticipate questions that you willbe asked so you are prepared with in-telligent, confident and articulateresponses. Be sure that you have definedyour strengths and weaknesses in advance,so when hard questions come up in the in-terview, you’ll be able to handle them withease.
• Be sure to be rested before head-
ing to the interview. You’ll look fresherand will think more clearly.
• Be ready to explain any gaps in your re-sume. If you have taken time off from yourfield to pursue a passion for travel, for in-stance, be ready to talk about that and toexplain how it has helped you professional-ly.
• Prepare your 30-second elevatorpitch to communicate your strengthsand goals. You never know where a con-versation with a hiring manager may lead.Be sure to tailor that pitch to every personyou meet, so it sounds natural and not re-hearsed.
• Be sure that your LinkedIn profileis current.
• Dress to impress. A unique acces-sory may help break the ice and start aconversation.
In the professional realm, presentationmatters from your social media profile toyour suit and tie.
Be sure that you showcase the best ver-sion of yourself.

Although this is the first story she’s writ-ten, Reilly’s background gives her a goodfoundation for penning children’s stories.
Reilly spent time as a psychiatric socialworker. She approached the work with thebelief that children are resilient and smart, and can grasp serious topics ifpresented properly.
“We don’t give children enough creditfor how much they really do retain, even ata young age,” Reilly said. “I don’t ever talkdown to children.”
“Angel Balloons” was written five yearsago when Reilly was 60.
That first story was not her last. It hasturned into a continuing series featuringSunshine and Ladybug, Reilly’s nicknamesfor her grandchildren. She has new storieswritten and waiting for publication.“Sunshine and Ladybug Share Christmas” isa holiday-themed story about helping thosewho are less fortunate, while “We Don’t EatGrass” addresses healthy eating. She’s work-ing on a fourth book about blended andextended families, and as the girls have got-ten older she’s introducing a newgrandchild, Nola, into the stories.
Reilly’s stories contain a mixture of actu-al events and fiction to get her messageacross to children. But she admits that while“Angel Balloons” was written to help theyoung girls process a death, it also had bene-fits for the author.
“The genesis of this was all just to try toget them through it, but then I realized itwas very cathartic for me as well,” she said.
Reilly also admits she is surprised by theattention and interest she has received fromher publisher.
It may have started as a hobby, but Reillytakes the writing process seriously. When it’stime to write, she heads upstairs to the com-
puter. When she’s finished or hits a snag, shesimply puts it away and does something else.
She wrote “Angel Balloons” in about aweek and is now preparing some promo-tional activities for her books.
Despite those activities, Reilly has neverlost sight in what started her down theirnew career path or what drives her to con-tinue writing.
“It was for the girls,” she said. “My familyis absolutely the most important thing in theworld to me.”

the kumquat, and the first event was heldon the lawn of the historic Pasco CountyCourthouse.
This year there will be 450 vendors, a carshow, children’s activities, an enlargedhealth and wellness section, entertainmentand, for the first time, several food trucks.
The food trucks are an additional compo-nent to the area’s restaurants and foodvendors at the festival, Moors said.
Local restaurants are always swarmed onfestival day, the chamber executive said, adding some restaurant owners have toldhim they do a week’s worth of business onthat single day.
Of course, the kumquat is king at thisevent, and vendors offer it up in myriadforms. There’s kumquat pie, kumquat salsas, kumquat jam, kumquat jelly, kumquat pre-serves, and even kumquat lotions and soaps.
Over the years, the event has helped putDade City on the map and has helped raisethe community’s profile. It was heralded by
B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTOJohn Moors, executive director of the Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce, said the18th annual Kumquat Festival promises to be a fun and affordable event.

the Pasco County Tourism Board as thePasco County Event of the Year in 2012 andhas enjoyed the distinction of being nameda “Top 20 Event” by the Southeast TourismSociety, which selects premier events in 13Southeastern states.
Offering the event without charging anadmission means that organizers rely on thegenerosity of sponsors, income from vendorfees and support achieved through otherfundraising efforts.
This year, Florida Hospital Zephyrhills isthe event’s headlining sponsor, Moors said.
Besides providing financial support, thehospital is a partner with the Tampa BayBuccaneers, so the team will be sending itsbus as well as cheerleaders and a player ortwo, Moors said.
The importance of the sponsors cannotbe overstated, Moors said.
They make it possible for event organiz-ers to stage the festival without admissionor parking charges, Moors said.
“There’s a lot of expense in puttingsomething like this on. Somebody has to payfor the buses and the Port-o-lets and the in-surance and the volunteer expenses,” thechamber executive said.
To get the full enjoyment out of theevent, Moors recommends that people ar-rive early.
“Get in and get settled and enjoy the day.”The festival is held, rain or shine.Moors is optimistic that the weather will
cooperate.“Bring an umbrella,” he said. “You can al-
ways leave it in the car.”
Yun said, adding that he expects those to in-crease. But they’ll be at historically lowlevels.
He also expects the pool of buyers to in-crease because the tight credit market iseasing.
There are also more buyers coming intothe market, he noted.
“Many people who went through shortsales, many people who went through fore-closures — they went into the penalty box. Now, they’re beginning to come out of thepenalty box,” Yun said.
An improved job market is another partof the equation.
“There’s more people working in theTampa region, so there’s more potentialhomebuyers,” Yun said.
But housing inventory is tight, which re-stricts the market, he explained.
The builders report that they don’t havetrouble selling the houses they build, butnot as many homes are being built, Yun said.
“When the housing market bust came, many went to Texas and North Dakota — oildrilling,” he said.
Another problem is the tight credit mar-ket for mom-and-pop builders, Yun said.
“New financial regulations have reallymade it difficult for the local communitybanks to make those construction loans,” hesaid.
“It was mom and pop who actually builtmore homes than the national builders, intotal,” Yun said.
“Homebuilders who used to get loans tobuild 20 homes are now able to get loans tobuild one home. They build it, they sell it,and then they repay the bank the moneyand they can get a loan for one more. So, it’sone at a time, rather than getting 20 all atonce.”
The lack of new housing has an impacton home sales, he said.
“We asked consumers, how many homesdo you want to see before signing the con-tract? They will say they want to see 10 to15 homes,” Yun said.
Besides creating forecasts for the NationalAssociation of Realtors, he also participatesin many economic forecast panels, includingThe Blue Chip Council and the HarvardUniversity Industrial Economists Council. In2008, USA Today listed Yun as among the top10 economic forecasters in the country.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
The Florida Department of Transportationis looking into the possibility of building ex-press toll lanes to give drivers an option topay more to travel through areas more quick-ly.
The concept has been used in other partsof the nation, and now state transportation of-ficials want to determine whether that trafficmanagement concept is a good one forTampa Bay.
It works like this: Express toll lanes arebuilt next to existing non-toll lanes on inter-states. The cost for using them is based ondemand.
State transportation officials are now de-veloping a master plan of express toll lanes
on the interstate system called the Tampa BayExpress (TBX).
The interstates under study for TBX in-clude Interstate 275 from south of GandyBoulevard to north of Bearss Avenue,Interstate 4 from I-275 to west of PolkParkway, and I-75 from State Road 674 tonorth of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.
The express lane concept is already inplace in Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, Miamiand other cities, where it has led to less trafficcongestion.
A public workshop will be held from 5p.m. to 7 p.m., at TPepin’s Hospitality Centre,4121 N. 50th St., in Tampa, to explain the con-cept to the public and to receive questions.

The Wiregrass Ranch boys’ tennis teamearned a share of the Class 3A state champi-onship last season. As a result, they knewexpectations would be high headed into2015. For his part, coach David Wilson hasalready admitted he doesn’t think the teamwill be as good as last year.
He thinks it will be better.“This will be the deepest team we’ve
had,” Wilson said of the current lineup. “Weactually added depth and strength to ourteam.”
Part of that depth and strength will comefrom a familiar last name.
Augie Moreno, defending state championand a top player on the team, will welcomehis little brother, Daniel, to the squad as afreshman. And with the championship teammostly intact from last year, the Bulls look tobe stronger than ever.
That’s a significant statement, sinceWiregrass Ranch has had successful tennisteams almost from its inception. Wilson hasbuilt a strong program since he took the jobfor the school’s opening athletic season in2006-07. While the tennis title was the firststate championship in school history, it wastheir third trip to the state tournament. Andthe district title was nothing new, either.Wilson said it was the team’s fifth-straightdistrict championship.
Part of the team’s success stems from theexcellent competition they face in practice.Wilson said the top players are all very com-petitive, and are capable of beating eachother on any given day. So, honing theirskills against each other makes the teamstronger.
“If you’re always playing against compet-itive players within your own team, thenyou’re just going to keep getting better,”Wilson said.
Senior Alejandro Feliciano, who wasranked fourth on the team last season, agrees that the team has taken steps for-ward as it tries to defend its title.
“We actually have better players thisyear,” he said.
Feliciano is one of those great players, with a United States Tennis Association rank-ing inside the top 100 and a national rankingaround 306 for players 18 and under.
While sheer talent gives Wiregrass Rancha clear advantage over most schools,Feliciano said that their coach plays a bigrole as well. Instead of trying to force themto adapt to his strategies, he gives them theleeway to simply put their talent on displaywhile he provides support however he can.
“I think it’s the fact that he bonds withus as if he were somebody our own age,” hesaid. “It’s like he’s one of us.”
Wilson is part of the tennis program be-cause he had a characteristic nobody elsehad when the school began athletic play: Hewas willing to do it.
“When I took the job, nobody else want-ed it,” he said. A recreational player, heknows that many of his players can beathim on the court. But his job is to providesupport, let them have fun and create a pos-
itive experience that keeps them wanting toparticipate in high school sports.
Creating that desire is no easy accom-plishment, since many players have theirown personal coaches, a bright future intennis and don’t really need the high schoolteam to further their careers.
“I think that’s the one thing that makesme the proudest, is that kids want to play inmy program,” Wilson said. “My saying for allmy sports (Wilson is also the school’s boys’soccer coach and athletic director) is the ex-perience outweighs the outcome. If it’s nota great experience for them, what’s thesense of doing it?”
Part of that experience includes hittingthe road to face elevated competition.Wiregrass Ranch will travel to Florida StateUniversity in Tallahassee next month to face
Pensacola Catholic High School, one of thestate’s top tennis teams. In March, they’lltravel to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the na-tional high school tournament.
Wilson isn’t concerned about a letdownafter achieving a state title. The team is fullof skilled players with plenty of experienceand a good working relationship together. But they also know that they had to sharetheir state title with Barron Collier HighSchool in Naples, since they finished withthe same amount of points in the competi-tion.
Being “co-champion” helps to motivatethem to claim the title for themselves in2015, Wilson said.
“The fact that we weren’t outright cham-pions by ourselves, we still have somethingto prove,” he said.
Wiregrass Ranch is ready to defend title

Things to considerwhen choosing a vetThe Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Choosing a health care provider for yourpet is one of the most important decisionsthat you’ll make, so you may want to consid-er these questions and answers posted onthe American Society for the Prevention ofCruelty to Animal’s website.
The advice comes from veterinarianLouise Murray, author of “Vet Confidential: AnInsider's Guide to Protecting Your Pet'sHealth.”
How Do I Find a Vet?The American Animal Hospital Association
(AAHA) evaluates veterinary practices on thequality of their facilities, staff, equipment andpatient care. Search the organization’s web-site at HealthyPet.com for a list of accreditedvets in your area.
Asking friends, family and trusted neigh-bors for a recommendation is a good idea, too. People who have a keen interest in theirdog’s health and well-being are particularlyhelpful sources.
How Do I Decide Which Vet isRight for My Dog?
When selecting a vet, it’s a good idea to:• Arrange the first appointment to be
without your dog so you can talk to the vet-erinarian and get an overall feel for thefacilities.
• Pay attention to the space: Is it clean?Modern? Well-organized?
• Ask how many vets there are on staff?Do vets share patients and cover for eachother during absences?
• Do you have a good rapport with thevet? Effective communication is essential toany health care relationship. Be sure to askany questions you have. Most vets appreciateit when their clients take an interest in theirpet’s health care.
What Questions Should I Ask When I’m Selecting a Vet?
Your questions may vary, depending onthe reason for your visit, but this list of ques-tions can serve as a guide:
• Is the practice accredited?• How are overnight patients monitored?• Does the vet refer patients to special-
ists?• How are patients evaluated before anes-
thesia and surgery?• Does the practice have licensed veteri-
nary technicians on staff?• What is the protocol for pain manage-
ment?Murray also offers a checklist, on the
ASPCA website, of what to expect when youare bringing your dog to the vet for the firsttime.
Those questions may include:• How long have you had your dog?• Where did you get your dog?• Has your dog been vaccinated? Against
what diseases?• What brand of pet food do you feed
your dog?• Is your dog’s appetite normal? How
much does he eat?• How much water does your dog drink?• Is your dog urinating and defecating reg-
ularly? Does he ever have accidents inside?• Is your dog displaying any of the follow-
ing symptoms: Coughing, sneezing, vomiting,diarrhea?
• Has your dog lost or gained weight?• Have you noticed any significant
changes in your dog’s behavior?• Has your dog ever suffered a serious
health issue? If so, what treatment did he re-ceive?
For more guidance on pet care issues, visit ASPCA.org.
