The Lung and the Lung cancer- an overview

LUNGS• Lung is the part of respiratory organ in our body,

which is very essential for the survival.• This is one of the region for the breathe in and

breathe out process.

Structure of lung

location• The lung is present in the chest

portion of the human body. The lung occupies maximum portion of the body

• Heart is present in between the portion of two lungs called “Mediastinum”

• The lung is covered by the ribs and the diaphragm in bottom which separates the lungs from the abdomen.

parts of the lung• Lung is divided into two right lung and left lung.• The right lung has three types of lobes called

upper lobe, middle lobe and lower lobes, whereas the left lung has two lobes.

• Size wise the left lung is smaller compared to right lung

• Bronchi are tubes present inside the lungs which then split into root like bronchioles, each bronchioles end up with multiple air sacs called alveoli.

Function of lung• the lung function during the

respiration processes called inhalation and exhalation

• the main function of lung is to convert the inhaled carbon dioxide into oxygen and gives to red blood cells and circulated through out the body.

• The oxygen from the inhaled air passes into the blood via alveoli

• Then the CO2 is taken to other part of the lungs where the air is exhaled.

Lung cancer

• The growth of abnormal cells in the lung is called tumors or cancer which then erodes the lung at faster rate.

• They start from the areas of the layer of bronchi and increases at the faster rate

• The lung tumor remain unpredictable for long duration till the condition get severe. The symptoms are also not predicted at the initial stage.

• the tumor remain very small at the initial stage, that it cannot be predicted under the observance of microscope.

Causes of lung cancer• The lung cancer is caused mainly due to the inhalation

of tobacco either through cigarette smoking or passive inhaling of tobacco.

• Non-smokers are also prone to lung cancer through by inhaling the smoke by various means.

• Some industrial workers who are exposed to certain metals like asbestos, arsenic, etc..

Symptoms of lung cancer

Early lung cancer symptoms are:• Cough which increases over the day• Chest pain• Difficulty in breathing• Infections in the bronchi and alveoli• Low appetite which reduces weight• Cough with outcome of blood

How to diagnose lung cancer?• X-ray: through the X-ray the

chance of predicting cancerous cell is minimum as they show all the distinguished hard part in white color.

• CT scan: this is painless method which used a ink to observe the cell precisely. This takes almost 30 minutes to show the result.

• Sputum cytology: the blood normally comes out with sputum. This is tested for the presence of cancer in the laboratory.

• Biopsy: this is the painful process. a thin tube is used to take small tissue from the lung cells and tested for cancer

Treatment of lung cancer• The part of the lung tissue removal is

recommended depending on the stage of lung cancer and the treatment procedure.

• Doctors have noting to do with advanced lung cancer, as it affects the parts beyond the lung.

• But the increase in technology has paved way for many treatment procedure for lung cancer in order to extend the lifetime of the affected men
