Luke 23:34

Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

And they divided His garments and cast lots.

The Five Elements of Prayer are

Worship

Thanksgiving

Confession

Petition

Intercession.

Matthew 6: 7-13 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.

13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Our prayers should not consist of

vain repetition

stock sentences

empty phrases

Prayer develops the trust that says I am laying everything out in the open

And

trust that you will help me get through this

James 4:2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain.

You fight and war.

Yet you do not have because you do not ask.

Selfish desire is dangerous because it leads to the wrong action, as well as leading to the wrong motive for praying.

Do you realize that self-seeking

living as well as self-centered

praying always lead to war?

Our prayers should be addressed to God the Father

in acknowledgement of His

sovereignty over the

universe

Psalms 147:3-6 He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.

4 He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name.

5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite. 6 The Lord lifts up the humble; He casts the wicked down to the ground.

A God that can count the number of the stars and know them by name

is a God that deserves the outpouring of adoration and love

Psalms 138:2 I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name

For Your loving-kindness and Your truth;

For You have magnified Your word above all Your name

God faithfully gives us strength in our souls,

to bear the burdens,

resist temptations,

to perform our duties in the Christian walk

Revelation 7:12 “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom, Thanksgiving and honor and power and might, Be to our God forever and ever. Amen.”

When there is worship in prayers,

it means Respect, Adoration, so that the

love of God is now in focused.

Matthew 6:7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

request becomes “vain repetition” if it is only talking nonsense without a sincere heart that is seeking to do God’s will

John 4:23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

Worship is the most important activity in a church family.

Prayer must flow out of worship

otherwise it becomes just another look busy activity and the prayers will lack power and be heartless.

Why are we to be thankful?

First, be thankful for the wonders of Salvation.

Second, be thankful for the joys of life as well as the tribulations

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 pray without ceasing,

18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Pray without ceasing does not mean to always mumble prayers.

The word means constantly recurring, not continuously occurring.

We are to keep the receiver off the hook and be in touch with God

so that our praying is part of a long conversation that is not broken.

1 Timothy 2:1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,

As member of the Body of Christ our hearts not only must be right with God but right with each other.

Prayer is both a privilege and an obligation

privilege to have an audience with God especially on behalf of someone else.

obligation, for we are debtors to everyone with reference to the good news of salvation

1 Timothy 4:4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving;

First of all confession is not praying a lovely prayer, or making self-righteousexcuses; or trying to impress God as well as other Christians.

Matthew 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

if our relationship is truly in tune with God;

then we will have a readiness to

forgive others.

Ephesians 4:32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted,

forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Colossians 3:13 bearing with one another, and

forgiving one another,

if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

if you forgive; your heavenly Father will also forgive.

Therefore, we must forgive, as we hope to be forgiven.

Luke 11:4 And forgive us our sins,

For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”

“Forgiveness” is based on the finished work of Jesus at the cross of Calvary and is received by faith alone

Forgiveness has to do with fellowship with God, rather than the relationship

Confession is the hardest thing we

must do in earnest prayer, which is

to confess our sins to the Lord.

WHY?

In earnest prayer as believers,

we must become clean and pure when

we pray to God

So what do we confess?

Include our willful disobedience to God’s Will.

Include our weakness as well as failures.

Include sins that we are not even aware.

1 John 1:9-10 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

Forgiveness is not some deception that God made up.

God is faithful to His promise as well as being a just God,

only because Jesus Christ died for our sins.

When we confess our sins, we must believe, on the authority of the Word of God that He forgives us.

If He forgives us, as believers we must be willing to forgive ourselves.

What is petition? Intercession and petition means to draw near to a person and converse confidently with them.

This suggests when we draw near to Our Lord Jesus as believer we can enjoy fellowship and have confidence in Him as we pray.

prayers must be within the scope of God’s Will

and with respect of God’s

Knowledge, timing, and will.

Luke 11:9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Luke 11:1-6 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. 3 Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”

4 When Jesus heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6 So, when He heard that he was sick, He stayed two more days in the place where He was.

when the Lord provides answers,

which sometimes: it is not what we want.

James 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

There are times when God said no,

It is for our own good because His knowledge tells us it would ruin a good testimony.

So make sure the motives in your prayer are in line with God’s Will.

Intercession means: the act of interceding

2: prayer, petition, or appeal in favor of another

petition is asking for our own needs,

intercession is praying for others.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.

No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Luke 23:34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

And they divided His garments and cast lots.

Jesus on the cross, Father the sign of Worship, forgive them interceding in confessing of sin;

The Missing element is Thanksgiving but it is implied

Jesus with out sin did not have to Confess

Jesus as Our Savior Lord who had no sin

only He board our sins on our behalf.

Three of the five should be maintained in our prayer life:

Worship, Confession, and Thanksgiving.

Petition and Intercession can vary.
