2 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
Season 2016/17 Highlights
Sir Simon RattleLSO MUSIC DIRECTOR DESIGNATE
Sir Simon Rattle’s 2016/17 concert season begins
once more with a collaboration with the enigmatic
Peter Sellars as the pair turn their attention to Ligeti’s
Le grand macabre. His concerts will also see two world
premieres – one a new work by Mark-Anthony Turnage,
the other a children’s opera by Andrew Norman –
and an end of season concert with Lang Lang.

Brahms and Berg as this season’s LSO Artist Portrait.
Many critics heap her with praise, The Independent
recently commenting that ‘Jansen’s commandingly
beautiful tone dignifies everything she plays’.

4 SIR SIMON RATTLE
Simon RattleMEET THE LSO’S MUSIC DIRECTOR DESIGNATE
Sir Simon Rattle will become the London Symphony Orchestra’s
Music Director in September 2017. But before he takes the helm, enjoy four
concerts that offer a glimpse of the imaginative music-making we can all look
forward to in the future.
New music has always been close to this conductor’s heart, and perhaps
none more so than the work of British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage.
Their relationship goes back decades and he knows that few composers could
create something able to stand up to the tragedy of Mahler’s Symphony No 6
(19 Jan 2017). This follows a new staging of one of the landmark operas of
the last 50 years – Ligeti’s Le grand macabre, a contemporary masterpiece –
brought to life in the Barbican Hall by director Peter Sellars (14 & 15 Jan 2017).
As a passionate advocate for music education, Sir Simon Rattle invites
members of the LSO Discovery Choirs and students from the Guildhall School
for a special side-by-side performance with LSO players (9 Jul 2017) before
finishing the 2016/17 season in style. We welcome back superstar pianist
Lang Lang for Bartók’s Piano Concerto No 2, before embarking on an
‘Imaginary Orchestral Journey’, with Sir Simon’s own selection of his favourite
excerpts from Haydn’s vast oeuvre (11 & 12 Jul 2017).

In partnership with
She’s one of the finest artists on the concert stage, a rare blend of
immaculate virtuosity with real emotional depth and passion. In 2016/17,
we are delighted to welcome back violin superstar Janine Jansen as the
subject of the season’s LSO Artist Portrait.
Alongside conductors Gianandrea Noseda, Sir Antonio Pappano and
former LSO Principal Conductor Valery Gergiev, she takes on three concertos
from three different eras. First is Bernstein’s Serenade, five movements
that draw on the philosophy of Plato’s Symposium to create an orchestral
meditation on the nature of love (5 Feb 2017).
Then it’s the powerhouse that is the Brahms Violin Concerto (12 Mar 2017),
a formidable challenge for any soloist, but a rich and rewarding experience for
both performer and audience alike. Berg’s Violin Concerto completes the triptych,
a modernist masterpiece that shows the composer in full lyrical force (6 Apr 2017)
in a programme complemented by Mahler’s expansive seventh symphony.
And, in collaboration with London’s Wigmore Hall, experience another
side to this multi-faceted performer with intimate recitals that showcase
her talents in a variety of chamber settings, featuring music by Brahms,
Prokofiev, Poulenc and Schubert.
So join us in 2016/17 as we celebrate Janine Jansen, one of the world’s
foremost musicians playing alongside London’s Symphony Orchestra.
‘Janine Jansen is a player that you follow wherever she leads.’The Times

Since the appointment of Simon Halsey as LSO Choral Director in 2012,
LSO Sing, the Orchestra’s choral programme, has rapidly gained momentum,
growing in scale and ambition year on year. In 2016/17 LSO Sing becomes
an ever more integral facet of the LSO’s work, with a series of concerts that
explore the length and breadth of the choral repertoire, from established
masterworks to relative rarities.
The season launches with two performances of Verdi’s monumental
Requiem under the commanding baton of Gianandrea Noseda. The Requiem
is one of Verdi’s most iconic works, setting the traditional liturgical Requiem
texts to music of unprecedented emotional scope. The series continues with
Sir John Eliot Gardiner, who completes his Mendelssohn symphony cycle with
the composer’s little performed gem, Lobegesang (Hymn of Praise).
Elsewhere in the series the Orchestra and Chorus perform Brahms’
transcendent masterpiece, the German Requiem, with conductor Fabio Luisi,
and John Adams’ sparkling Nativity Oratorio El Niño under the direction of
the composer himself. Bernard Haitink brings the series to its close with Bruckner’s
blazing Te Deum, a tour-de-force of orchestral and choral virtuosity that the
composer himself considered one of the crowning achievements of his career.

LSO Principals
With some of the finest orchestral players among its
ranks, the LSO has established something of a tradition of
featuring its Principal players. In addition to regular solo
performances at the Barbican, players have worked on
collaborations at LSO St Luke’s – such as Principal Percussion
Neil Percy’s 2010 partnership with composer Tim Garland –
as well as concerts with smaller orchestral ensembles,
with the LSO String Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Woodwind
Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble all taking centre stage
in 2015/16.
The past few seasons have increasingly seen LSO
Principal players stepping into the spotlight as soloists.
Highlights have included LSO Leader Roman Simovic
performing the Glazunov Violin Concerto in February 2015,
Principal Cello Tim Hugh’s ‘masterly’ performance of
the Elgar Cello Concerto in January 2013, and the pair’s
collaboration for the Strauss Double Concerto for Violin
and Cello in May 2014.
In the coming season we welcome back Roman Simovic,
who will be performing the Bruch Violin Concerto, as well
as collaborating once more with Tim Hugh for Brahms’
compelling Double Concerto. We also welcome Principal
Trumpet Philip Cobb as a featured soloist, performing
Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto; Philip will also join the
Brass Ensemble as they make a triumphant return in
our annual Christmas concert.

‘When I hear his music it is as though I am doing a good deed, and the longer I live, the more I love him. No one other than he has made me weep, tremble with joy from recognition of the closeness to something which we call the ideal.’
Tchaikovsky was one of the great Romantics, yet he revered Mozart’s music above all others, not only relishing it for its clarity and beauty, but also associating it in his mind with a lost, golden age of elegance and manners. In four wide-ranging concerts, ten talented musicians explore this obsession in songs, piano trios, string quartets and piano music – including the Mozart pieces Tchaikovsky used in his Fourth Orchestral Suite.

RUSSIAN REVOLUTIONARIES
Thu 2, 9, 16 & 23 Feb 2017 1pm
Four pianists celebrate the riches of the Russian piano repertoire before and after the momentous events of 1917, when the country was shaken by not one but two revolutions. For the Russian people, life changed utterly as society was remodelled from top to bottom. Composers’ reactions varied widely. Rachmaninov left Russia as quickly as he could, soon followed by Medtner and Prokofiev – who would later return home. The Shostakovich family, by contrast, welcomed the revolutions – though precocious young Dmitri was only eleven at the time.
This series marks the centenary with four concerts that each feature Russian piano music both ‘before’ and ‘after’ 1917: from Tchaikovsky through Rachmaninov and Medtner to Prokofiev and Shostakovich.

One of the world’s most charismatic viola soloists, Lawrence Power has been praised for his ‘technical brilliance and emotional depth’ and described as ‘an artist of exceptional expressive power.’ Here he takes charge of the latest of our curated ‘and Friends’ series, inviting a distinguished group of kindred spirits to join him in a celebration of the viola as chamber-music star, revealing it in many settings and contexts, guises and characters. The Guardian has said of Power that ‘his tone is breathtakingly beautiful, rich and poetic, but such is his insight that the music, rather than his technique, is what commands attention.’ Plenty to look forward to.

BRUCH AND VAUGHAN WILLIAMS WITH THE NASH ENSEMBLE
Thu 2, 9, 16 & 30 Mar 2017 1pm
The inimitable Nash Ensemble celebrate two of the most tuneful chamber music composers of their time – and their little- known connection.
In 1897 the young Englishman Ralph Vaughan Williams spent an enjoyable few months in Berlin studying with the renowned German composer Max Bruch. ‘Bruch encouraged me,’ Vaughan Williams recalled, ‘and I had never had much encouragement before.’ Bruch’s official testimonial for Vaughan Williams calls him ‘a very good musician and a talented composer’; Vaughan Williams also remembered Bruch appreciating his ‘ve-ry o-riginaal ideeas’ – though not his harmonies, which were ‘rather too originell’. Hearing their music together, the delightful surprise is discovering how much they had in common.

‘When I started learning the cello’, the great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich once said, ‘I fell in love with the instrument because it seemed like a voice – my voice’. Following on from previous series devoted to the piano and the violin, For the first time, LSO St Luke’s makes room for four concerts devoted to ravishing music for that same singing bass instrument. The line-up is good company: Narek Hakhnazaryan, still in his 20s and currently a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, is one of the brightest rising stars on the scene, while Christian Poltéra and Alban Gerhardt have both established outstanding international solo careers. The cast is completed by duos from the LSO’s own two brilliant Principal Cellos, Tim Hugh and Rebecca Gilliver.
