London Imaging Discovery June 16th 2007
Report & Synopsis
The second annual London Imaging Discovery Forum, hosted on June 16th 2007 at the
London Convention Centre, was once again a marvelous success. Coordinated through
Robarts Research Institute’s Imaging Research Laboratories in collaboration with the
Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine and the Schulich school of
Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario, this conference was
pioneered by Dr. Rethy Chhem, Chief of Radiology at the London Health Sciences
Centre; and Dr. Aaron Fenster, Director of the Imaging Research Lab.
The London Imaging Discovery conference has been named “The LID”, the organ of
sight or vision, which was selected to capture the paradigm of London as a unique place
for many imaging discoveries. This forum is designed to replace the former Radiology
Residency Day, while also bringing together radiologists, clinicians, scientists and
students from London Medical Imaging Community. The goal of the LID forum is to
create a platform to connect those in the field of medical research with those in the field
of clinical medicine, to encourage harmonious relationships between medical
professionals (and future professionals) in these two distinct areas.
Attendance
The key attendees of the LID Forum are local scientists, physicians, clinicians &
radiologists, residents, fellows and graduate students from the London Area. This year
we attracted nearly 150 registrants from within these categories with more than a third
being students. The chart below shows a breakdown of participating institutes:

Scientific Sessions
Topics at the second annual London Imaging Discovery Forum focused on various
imaging modalities such as Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging and themes
ranging from Breast Imaging to Schizophrenia. Select moderators from the London
Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Healthcare headed the morning, mid-morning
and afternoon sessions, with a poster reception of 43 posters at the close of the day.
(See Appendix A – LID 2007 Schedule)
The London Imaging Discovery Forum, having replaced the Radiology Residency Day,
had a number of resident presentations from the Department of Diagnostic Radiology &
Nuclear Medicine at the University of Western Ontario, with 3 out of 10 presentations.
The attendees were also graced by the expertise of Dr. Martin Yaffe who spoke about
“Developments in Breast Cancer Imaging”.
Awards
Dr. Justin Amann presented the resident awards to the various award winners from the
Radiology Residency Program:
The Rankin/Singh Award for 2007 was presented to Dr. Mustafa Khan
The Carey/Singh Award for 2007 was presented to Dr. Branko Budisin
The Resident’s Day Research Award for 2007 was presented to Dr. Allison Shaikh.
The RSNA Roentgen Resident Research Award winner for 2007 was Dr. Allison
Shaikh.
Dr. Richard Rankin was recognized by the residents for his excellent teaching with
the 2007 Resident’s Choice Award.
Additionally, 37 student poster presenters (out of 43 total poster presenters) competed
for the best student poster awards. Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals donated a first
place student cash award, and Compudata Systems donated the second and third
place student poster prizes. Presenters were a conglomeration of students, scientists
and various research assistants and programmers from Robarts Research Institute,
London Health Sciences Centre and Department of the Department of Diagnostic
Radiology & Nuclear Medicine and the Schulich school of Medicine & Dentistry at the
University of Western Ontario the University of Western Ontario.
The 3 student poster winners for “best overall student poster” were:
1st place – Patrick Granton, Graduate Student at Robarts Research Institute
2nd place – Raul Rupsingh, Graduate Student at Robarts Research Institute
3rd place – John Conklin, Graduate Student at Lawson Health Research Intitute
(See appendix B for full list of poster presenters)
