Principal: Dr. Deb Kollross
Dean of Students—Tony DePaolo
Assoc. Princ.: Wally Gnewikow
Activities Dir: Jordan Gilge
Hello! This is by far the most difficult newsletter I have written. Each time I went to write a few words, I could not get them on paper. It was the realization that this was my last newsletter, which was making the pro-cess difficult. It was acknowledging what matters the most, that finally gave my pen words. I have been so fortunate to work with such amazing students, staff, parents, and community members. At the heart of everyone is the care and concern for others that allows our learning community to thrive. While it was a difficult decision to retire, I am thankful for the time I had at Logan High School. I know I have been fortunate to lead the BEST high school there is! Tolerance, kindness, and patience are but a few qualities I hope have found a place in everyone’s heart. We need to recognize how delicate, yet strong our students are on so many levels. I encourage everyone to continue to grow and meet the changing de-mands within the educational realm. When faced with adversity, find solutions, when faced with challenges, be creative, when faced with greatness, celebrate! For there is no other school quite like Logan High School, where the Logan Family makes commitments to support each other whenever needed! To everyone, remember the “Front Door,” for this is where each day begins. We all have the chance to smile, say, “Good morning,” and “Have a great day!” Last, I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Mr. Gnewikow, as the next principal at Logan High School. Please welcome him with open arms and all that Logan stands for! Sincerely,
Dr. Deborah S. Kollross

On behalf of the Logan High School GSA, Katie Beyer and Byron Holz have been awarded a grant by the La
Crosse Public Education Foundation. The grant will allow Logan to host nationally-known safe schools advocate Jamie Nabozny to speak to the entire school next October. The presentation will be a part of the city-wide Unity Day which raises awareness about bully-ing and teaches techniques to prevent it.
Nabozny was seriously bullied while a student in Ashland, Wisconsin. Both middle school and high school administrators failed to take action, even after he received life-threatening injuries. Fearing for his life, Nabozny eventually left school. He sued school officials for failing to act to end the bullying. Nabozny v. Podle-sny set precedent and affirmed school personnel’s legal re-sponsibility to protect stu-dents. The story has been made into the movie, Bullied: A Student, a School and a Case That Made History.

This past Fall, the La Crosse Public Education Foundation and the La Crosse Community Foun-dation graciously gave grants that were used to purchase readers for Logan’s Spanish classes. The LPEF grant purchased 30 classroom readers for the following four books: Esperanza, Agentes secretos y el Mundo de Picasso, La hija del Sastre, and La Guerra Sucia. Through a Glob-al Awareness Grant, The La Crosse Community Foundation granted the purchase of 30 readers for La Llorona de Mazatlán, La Mara Salvatrucha, and Frida Kahlo.
Through the book, La Mara Salvatrucha, Spanish V students have explored many topics related to the MS13 gang such as the civil war in El Salvador, child soldiers, why many immigrants in the U.S. have been children from El Salvador and how this notorious gang began in the United States. These stu-dents are not only improving their literacy skills in Spanish but also developing an awareness of cur-rent events. They are working on grammar structures to give opinions on what they are reading. These students mentioned the readers are easy to read and interesting!
Spanish Immersion students have been using the new Frida Kahlo reader. These students have creat-ed self- portraits and added their joys and concerns as part of the self-portrait emulating what the artist Frida Kahlo is known for. These students created a family tree in Spanish of Frida’s family and will be acting out chapters from the book. These same students also went to the Minneapolis Institute of Art to view other artist’s self -portraits to compare. We want to thank both the La Crosse Public Education Foundation and the La Crosse Community Foundation for their generous gifts! We can’t wait to start using the other readers in our classes next year!
Please help us con-gratulate two mem-bers of our district family - Lyn Halvor-son and Teresa Zahn! Halvorson was hon-ored with the School Nutrition Association of Wisconsin's (SNA-WI) 2018 Director of
the Year Award and Logan High School's Zahn was honored as the 2018 Employee of the Year. Both will be honored at the SNA-WI Annual State Conference in June.

Day of Silence
Logan Parent Newsletter
Logan students and staff organized a week-long campaign that led up to the na-tion-wide event, Day of Silence, a day where students take a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of bullying and harassment. During lunches, students collected sig-natures from classmates who pledged to stand up for those who have been silenced.
In addition, DOS videos were shown in the pit and there was a nice display that provided ways to speak up against transphobia, ableism, homophobia, gender-based harassment, racism, and income inequali-ty. At the end of the week, Logan students showed their support by not speaking for the entire day! To break the silence, Mayor Kabat visited Logan to read a proclamation recognizing the event city wide.
Thank you to all the teachers, administrators, community members, and students for making this event a success!

Tips to avoid being a party to underage drinking
• Don't be afraid to be the bad guy. Taking a tough stand on alcohol use can
help youth say no when they are pressured to drink by their friends.
• Talk with other adults about hosting alcohol-free youth events. Unity cre-
ates a tough, enforceable message.
• Set a positive example. If you host a party, always serve alternative non-
alcoholic beverages and do not let anyone drink and drive.
• Stay home if a teen is a hosting a party in your home. Observe the activities
and confiscate any alcohol that may be brought by party goers.
Report underage drinking to the police promptly.
