There is a world—no, a universe—of data available to mobile devices that can be combined with location data to generate a much more engaging and personalized mobile experience. Who’s using it? How can you? Get creative!!This presentation will explore how latitude and longitude can be combined with time of day, sunrise/sunset calculations, weather reports, phases of the moon, alignment of the planets, biorythmic patterns, proximity to family and friends, etc… in order to generate meaningful “lifestyle” applications and immersive gaming experiences--all with novel visualizations and a sense of humor.

Transcript of Location, Location, Location... What are we Missing?

• Joe Davis• White Horse

Location, Location, Location…

This presentation is NOT…

• Coding hour• Stone tablets from on high

This presentation IS…

• Ideation – fodder for the grey matter• Think up something new

Yesterday’s science fiction is today’s reality!

Location is so 2009

2012? Not so much. Why?

User context to the rescue

• The user’s environment, tools, and self• Context-sensitive applications hunt and

gather application input by observing the user or asking them for clues

• Be somewhere or do something

Optional: Applying creative context to user context

• SCA for the digital age

Hardware: the eyes and ears of the application

• Narrow it down – Smartphones

Let’s go through them individually, then we’llcombine them for fun!

Global Positioning (GPS)• Or… Wi-Fi triangulation

Provides:• Location (Lat, Lon, Altitude)

Can be used to decipher:• Direction of travel• Proximity to other objects• Speed

Accelerometer

Provides:• Pitch, yaw, roll

Can be used to decipher:• Position relative to gravity• Motion/Gestures

Camera

Provides:• Visual reference to environment

Can be used to decipher:• What I see• Light vs. dark• Inside vs. outside• AR Targets (Augmented Reality)

Two Cameras

Provides:• Parallax

Can be used to decipher:• Depth perception• 3D meshes

Compass

Provides:• Electro-magnetic field (EMF) detection

Can be used to decipher:• Position relative to the North and South poles• Presence of EMF

Microphone

Provides:• Audio signal input

Can be used to decipher:• Ambient noise levels• Verbal input cues

Data / Web Services

Provides the awesome-sauce for richer contexts

Can be:• Collected from user• Pulled from online service provider

Examples:

• Calendar/Contacts• Proximity to other users/locations (Geoloqi)• Driving directions/terrain (Google Maps or…)• Weather, current or forecast (NOAA, etc…)• Astronomical data• Astrological data• Prices for goods/services/commodities

Do you have data someone could use?

Be a sport and share!

Doesn’t matter how:• ReST• SOAP• RPC• RDF• ATOM/APP

Give us some examples!

Read: finally, some pictures…

Zombies, Run!

Parallel Kingdom

Motorola Smart Actions

Let’s explore an app idea right now!

• Premise: Vampires, Hunters, Werewolves• You are the playing piece• Event-based interactions• Proximity detection

… add creative context…• Sunrise/sunset• Full moons• Cloud cover

More ideas?

Ghost Hunter • Record EVP (electronic voice phenomenon)• Detect EMF (electro-magnetic field)• Get video/photo evidence• Upload to server and swap ghost stories

Galactic Empire • Who wants to be mayor of Starbucks when

you could be ruler of the galaxy?!?• Use AR to visualize and interact with trade

routes… (ala Google Sky)
