Lamma Street Furniture
How Poor Design is Ruining the Character of one Hong Kong Village
Are these appropriate designs for a village setting?
Railings – grey, unpainted
And fencing for the harbourfront
More grey metal
Lampposts – all grey metal, the same as we have on our highways (there are no cars on Lamma)
The village clock – large, digital with dog poop brown and pink motif
Substations – more grey metal
A concrete nullah (and more grey metal)
LCSD’s beach facilities – why pink? And why so many notices?
The bins – everyday it’s like this, no integrated waste and recycling facilities
The “feature wall” – grey, concrete
The “community notice board”
The sitting area by the well
This is what old wells can look like (but not in Hong Kong)
Concrete sitting area – now covered in graffiti
Concrete play area, that no-one uses (no shade, too many lost balls)
Trees in metal or concrete
Poor design is ruining Lamma
• Government projects follow standard designs that may be appropriate for inner city areas or industrial estates, but which are killing the character of rural areas, not just on Lamma, but all across Hong Kong.
• We need better design that enhances village-scapes and reflects the natural beauty of the environment.
Please help
• Adopt a project: choose and aspect of design on Lamma and develop it as a project.
• Write to Carrie Lam, Director of Development, to complain about the lack of sensitivity in rural design: sdev@devb.gov.hk.
