LISTENING TEXT

WHO ARE BRITISH CITIZENS?

Liu Lei (LL) is talking with Sarah (S) about British people .

LL: Sarah, did you say that Britain is a multicultural count

ry?S: Yes, I did. We have people from different cultures and countries.LL: I don’t quite understand. If they come from different cultures and countries, how do you know that they’re British? S: Well, there are three different groups of British citizens. Let me tell you about the first group.

A long time ago Britain ruled many countries. When these countries became independent, their people were given a choice. They could either become British citizens or remain in their own country.

LL: Now let me see if I’ve got it right. Did you say that they had to choose which country to belong to?

S: Yes, and many chose to remain in their own country, but some

wanted to be British and came to Britain.

LL: I see. So that’s the first group.

Part 2

LL: So what about the second and third groups?

S: Well, the second group’s easy. They’re people with British parents

or who were born in Britain. This is the largest number of British

citizens.

LL: And the third group?

S: They come from other countries. But if a person lives and

works in Britain for five years they can become a British

citizen.

LL: I see. What if you have black skin?

S: It doesn’t matter what colour your skin is! Many black pe

ople came from the Caribbean, India or Pakistan to set u

p small businesses. They’re all British now.

LL: Have they contributed to British culture?

S: Oh yes, with their music and food, of course! We’ve a new

national dish from India called chicken tikka masala. It i

s now more popular than our traditional national dish of

fish and chips. So you can see how truly multicultural we

are!

A PARTICULAR BRITISH

CELEBRATION

On the fifth of November 160

6 Guy Fawkes tried to blow up

the Houses of Parliament.

There is a festivity dedicated to

Guy Fawkes and it is called Bo

nfire Night or Guy Fawke's.

On that night people light fire

works and make bonfires.

1. Fill in the timeline.

Oct.10 Catesby asked Guy Fawkes to join

a plot to blow up the government.

27 The two bought a house close to

the Houses of Parliament

28 They store gunpowder in the

when he heard of the plan. He

found Fawkes.

6 Parliament was opened and there

were celebrations because the plot

had failed.

Get into fours. You are going to retell this story in a group. Decide whether you would like to be Guy Fawkes, Robert Catesby, King James or an eyewitness. Think about what your character would say or do. When you are ready, practice your speech so that you tell the story as a group. Be prepared to do it in front of the class.

Task

introduce your character and explain

reasons for your behavior;

discuss whether you behaved sensibly

or not;

Finally discuss what might have

happened if King James had kept his

promise.

Things to remember:

My character is Robert Gatesby. I

want to kill the king and replace him

with another king who is kinder to

Catholics. My family have suffered a

lot during the bad treatment of

Catholics. So I think I am right to do

what I am doing.
