What is the linguistics?

LINGUISTIC- the study of language and of the

way language work.

- the scientific study of language and its structure, including the study of morphology, syntax, phonetics, phonology and semantics. Specific branches of linguistics include sociolinguistics, dialectology, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, historical-comparative linguistics, and applied linguistics.

The part of linguistics that is concerned with the structure of language is divided into a number of subfields:

Phonetics - the study of speech sounds in their physical aspectsPhonology - the study of speech sounds in their cognitive aspectsMorphology - the study of the formation of words

Syntax - the study of the formation of sentencesSemantics - the study of meaningPragmatics - the study of language use

Aside from language structure, other perspectives on language are represented in specialized or interdisciplinary branches:

Historical-comparative Linguistics - that is concerned with comparing languages in order to establish their historical relatedness.

Sociolinguistics – study of linguistic behavior as determined by sociocultural factors

Psycholinguistics – study of the mental faculties involved in the perception, production, and acquisition of language.

Dialectology – a form of language that is spoken in particular area and that uses some of its own words, grammar, and pronunciations.

Computational Linguistics - the branch of linguistics in which the techniques of computer science are applied to the analysis and synthesis of language and speech

Applied linguistics - is an interdisciplinary field of linguistics that identifies, investigates, and offers solutions to language-related real-life problems.
