A well-managed classroom will minimize your discipline problems

If you do not have a plan, then you are planning to fail!

Discipline With A Plan

Two kinds of teachers:

◦ Reactive: teacher who doesn’t know what to do. 80% of classroom problems are caused by ineffective teachers.

◦ Proactive: has a plan and procedures in place that is organized for academic success

Continuum of Discipline Plans

Use rules to state your specific behavior expectations, not what you want performed.

Limit rules to a maximum of 5.

Examples:◦ Sit in your assigned seat daily.◦ No food or drinks allowed in class.

Classroom Rules

Problem Solving Plan1. What’s the problem?2. What’s causing the problem? (Please list the

factors)3. What plan will you use to solve the problem?4. Signature & Date line

Classroom Rules

The number one problem in the classroom is not discipline; it is the lack of procedures & routines.

Why students do not follow procedures:1. Teacher has not thought out what happens in

the classroom.2. Students have not been taught how to follow

procedures.3. Teacher spends no time managing the classroom

with procedures.

Classroom Routines & Procedures

Discipline concerns how students behave.

Procedures concern how things are done.

Discipline has penalties and rewards.

Procedures have no penalties or rewards.

Discipline vs. Procedures

Procedure: What the teacher wants done.

Routine: What the students do automatically.

Procedures vs. Routines

Three Step Approach:1. Explain. State, explain, model and demonstrate the procedure.

2. Rehearse. Rehearse and practice the procedure under your supervision.

3. Reinforce. Reteach, rehearse, practice, and reinforce the classroom procedure until it becomes a student habit or routine.

Teaching Classroom Procedures

What 2 groups determine the continuum of discipline plans?

Why are classroom procedures important?

Objective #3: Understand the continuum of discipline plans.

Objective #4: Develop Classroom Procedures & Routines.

Lets Review

Develop procedures for the following:◦ How do you dismiss students?◦ How do you quiet class and gain students

attention?◦ How do students ask you for help?

Include: Explain, Rehearse, Reinforce

Group Activity

How to Structure Group Activities◦ Specify the group NAME.◦ Specify the group SIZE.◦ State the PURPOSE, MATERIALS, and STEPS of

the activity.◦ Teach the PROCEDURES.◦ Insist on INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY for the

work of the group.◦ Teach the EVALUATION METHODS the students

can use to determine how successfully they have worked together.

Grouping

Review Purpose & Types of Grades & Gradebooks.

Objective #5

For the effective teacher, recording what and how well students are doing is essential in assessing and helping each student reach maximum learning capacity.

Designed properly, a gradebook should let you see each students results and progress immediately.
